Overview
Position: Sheriff’s Deputy Trainee (enrolled in P.O.S.T. Academy) with duties in a non-sworn capacity as required. The County is accepting applications to fill vacancies in All Locations throughout Santa Barbara County. A list will be used to fill current and future vacancies; candidates must be willing to accept an assignment at any location. TO APPLY: visit the SB County jobs site. Attend a Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) Academy to receive instruction to qualify for the class of Sheriff’s Deputy. In a non-sworn capacity, perform other duties as required during training and as assigned. Attend the Basic Peace Officers Academy for instruction on law enforcement procedures, combined with rigorous physical fitness training. Study topics including firearms care and use, weaponless defense, first aid, laws of arrest and evidence, and law enforcement techniques and procedures. Maintain at least the minimum level of proficiency in all training areas. Ideal Candidate Characteristics

Education: Graduation from high school or a valid GED License: Valid California Driver License at time of appointment Age: At least 20 years old at application and 21 years old at appointment Physical Fitness: Excellent physical condition; able to pass a County medical standard examination and a P.O.S.T.-endorsed physical agility examination General: Meet minimum peace officer standards (CA Government Code 1029/1031); no prior felony convictions (with specific limitations Ability to observe, learn, read, and understand laws, policies, and procedures; perform quick and effective action under stress; undergo physical conditioning to complete the Recruit Academy Additional Requirement: Probationary period completion; legally authorized to work in the United States Background and Disqualifications
Felony admissions or current probation/parole status may be disqualifying Unfavorable work history, poor credit history, or history of domestic violence Convictions for sex crimes or recent illegal drug use; dishonesty or failure to reveal information Selection Process and Examinations
PHQ, written examination (NTN or POST-based options) or PELLETB; procedures, deadlines, and instructions will be provided to qualified applicants Physical Agility Test (PAT) required after written exam; dates may be specified (e.g., November 21, 2025, in Lompoc) Eligible List: passing the written exam; list valid for at least three months; notification of score and rank by email Background components: polygraph, background investigation, Livescan, post-offer medical and psychological examinations Veteran’s Preference
