Friends of The Underline seeks a highly organized and agile professional who is passionate about improving Miami and fostering community connections. The Controller oversees the accounting operations, ensuring financial accuracy, compliance with regulations, and transparency for donors and authorities.
Position Summary
Key responsibilities include overseeing budgeting, financial reporting, managing audits, maintaining financial records, and developing internal controls and policies. Essential Functions:
Financial Management and Reporting: Oversee all accounting functions, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and general ledger. Manage the monthly and annual closing processes and ensure timely preparation of accurate financial statements. Conduct financial analysis and forecasting, and prepare reports for senior management, the board, and funding partners. Maintain organized financial records and ensure they are compliant with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and nonprofit-specific regulations. Oversee financial aspects of grant budgeting, reporting and analysis. Prepare reports for Finance, Investment and Audit Committees. Supports CFO with management and board reporting as assigned. Compliance & Audits:
Coordinate annual external financial audits and provide support to auditors. Develop and implement internal controls to safeguard assets and prevent fraud. Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations and provide information needed for tax filings (e.g., IRS Form 990, Annual 1099s). Budgeting & Planning:
Lead the development and management of the annual budget in collaboration with the CFO and senior leadership. Monitor budget performance, provide financial forecasts, and offer recommendations for adjustments. Leadership:
Manage and mentor finance staff, providing training and development. Collaborate with programming, operations and development teams to ensure proper reporting, allocations and funding compliance. Provide financial analysis and insights to support decision-making processes. Perform other duties as assigned. Skills and Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance. Minimum 5 years of experience in accounting, with at least two years in a leadership/supervisory role. Experience in nonprofit accounting principles, financial reporting, and compliance requirements. Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Google Sheets, Microsoft Office, and Google Workspace. Experience in QuickBooks Online and BILL.com strongly preferred. Excellent communication skills to present financial information to both finance and non-finance staff. High level of integrity, discretion, and the ability to exercise independent judgment. Strong analytical and organizational skills to interpret complex financial data. Benefits
