About the Role
This position focuses on incorporating sustainability into King County’s Wastewater Treatment Division (WTD) capital improvement projects. It will lead sustainable materials and construction and demolition (C&D) materials management for WTD and support sustainability initiatives, including solar installations, Green Operations and Maintenance efforts, and securing sustainable grant and funding opportunities. The role will coordinate across WTD’s capital portfolio to assist projects pursuing third‑party green building certifications. Beyond green building technical expertise and capital project management skills, the successful candidate will have a strong commitment to sustainable design and mitigating climate change. They will be self-motivated, detail oriented, and able to communicate complex subject matter effectively within cross‑functional project and program teams. About the Team
The role is supervised by the Climate, Energy and Sustainability Supervisor within the Resource Recovery Unit of WTD’s Operations and Maintenance Section. The group brings together resources, technology, and practices to deliver environmentally sustainable programs, including Loop biosolids soil amendment, recycled water, and renewable energy, while managing sustainability, energy, technology assessment, and nutrient management programs. The Climate, Energy and Sustainability work group includes the Sustainability Program, focused on King County sustainability policies such as the Strategic Climate Action Plan (SCAP) and Green Building Ordinance (GBO). Work includes advancing green building, low‑embodied‑carbon Construction materials, green O&M, and construction and demolition waste diversion in WTD operations and capital projects. WTD’s mission is to protect public health and the environment by treating wastewater and recovering valuable resources for the Puget Sound region. Serve as a green building and sustainable design subject matter expert for WTD’s capital program and projects, including solar installations and green O&M. Educate capital project and operations staff on sustainable materials and construction and demolition material management, and support implementation on WTD capital projects. Coordinate across projects to provide technical assistance for third‑party green building certifications (e.g., LEED, Envision, Living Building Challenge, Salmon‑Safe). Develop resources, tools, and communications to advance sustainability across WTD staff. Manage sustainability funding and grants for WTD projects and track compliance and reporting for awarded grants. Support WTD’s Sustainability Program and other duties as assigned. Qualifications You Bring
Bachelor’s degree in sustainability, environmental studies, engineering, architecture, or related field, or a combination of work experience and education providing the necessary skills. Knowledge of sustainability concepts such as sustainable infrastructure, C&D material management, sustainable materials, third‑party sustainability scorecards, greenhouse gas and emissions reduction, climate mitigation, equity, social justice, and community engagement. Familiarity with King County SCAP and GBO and experience applying and tracking compliance/reporting of sustainability policy. Demonstrated ability to research and develop program guidance, procedures, and technical reports. Excellent written and oral communication skills, with the ability to convey technical concepts to diverse audiences. Competencies You Bring

Remote and onsite work: most work is remote with occasional onsite requirements (3–4 days per month) at King County worksites and treatment facilities. Onsite locations may include King Street Center and treatment plants. Residency: employees must reside in Washington State and be within reasonable distance to King County worksites. Work Schedule: full-time, 40 hours per week, Monday–Friday. This position is not overtime eligible and is not covered under FLSA.
