Faculty Responsibilities

In addition to teaching and scholarship, faculty are expected to engage in service to the university, profession, and community. Responsibilities include advising students, participating in campus and system-wide communities, maintaining office hours, working collaboratively with colleagues, and participating in traditional academic functions. Sonoma State supports the Teacher/Scholar model and undergraduate research opportunities. Faculty are expected to contribute to the CSU Graduation Initiative 2025 through excellent teaching, advising, and mentoring. Review the University’s Reappointment, Tenure, and Promotion Policy. During the first two years of the probationary period, instructional assignments may be reduced by two courses per academic year to establish research, scholarship, and/or creative activities and support retention, tenure, and promotion requirements. The Department of Kinesiology is within the College of Science, Technology, and Business and offers a cross-disciplinary curriculum addressing human movement across the lifespan from sociocultural, biological/physical, behavioral, and humanistic perspectives. The program prepares graduates to apply kinesiology principles to motor skill acquisition, performance, and refinement, and to use physical activity as an educative tool and a medium for health promotion and active living. The department offers a Bachelor of Science with three concentrations: Exercise Science/pre-Physical Therapy; Interdisciplinary/pre-Occupational Therapy; Lifetime Physical Activity. A Biomedical Engineering minor has been approved and will accept students in January 2026. The department actively recruits students from diverse backgrounds, including local community college students, first-generation college students, dual language learners, and Pell-eligible individuals. Primary teaching responsibility will be Lifespan Motor Development. Additional teaching responsibilities may include research methods, physical activity for diverse populations, aging and disability, health and wellness across the lifespan, foundations of kinesiology, personal fitness and wellness, and physical activity courses. The candidate may contribute to other courses or develop new courses related to their area of specialization. Other responsibilities include developing a line of research, writing grant proposals, advising students, contributing to departmental administration and committees, serving on campus-wide committees, developing a physical activity program for the community for older adults (preferred), and active involvement in professional organizations in kinesiology or related fields. Required Qualifications

To be recommended for appointment, the candidate must have: Ph.D. in Kinesiology or closely related field with expertise in motor development and physical activity across the lifespan Interdisciplinary approach to teaching and research in Kinesiology, with knowledge of human movement across the lifespan from social and biological/physical perspectives Evidence of successfully teaching courses in motor development, physical activity and movement across diverse populations or community fitness and wellness at the university level Evidence of scholarly publications or other scholarly activities in motor development and physical activity across the lifespan Preferred Qualifications

Teaching and/or scholarship on how multiple factors inform physical activity and motor development over the lifespan Teaching and/or scholarship in health and physical activity promotion including community-based strategies Experience involving undergraduate students in research projects, presentations, and/or publications Evidence of advising undergraduate students Experience developing, leading, or teaching community-based physical activity programs for older adults or individuals with disabilities Rank and Salary

Service credit depends upon academic preparation and professional experience. The anticipated salary range for this position is: $84,004 to 89,779, depending on qualifications. Required Application Materials
