The Torts Division in Tumwater, Seattle, Spokane and Tacoma have immediate openings for trial attorneys eager to practice in state and federal courts throughout Washington. Responsibilities
Attorneys in the Torts Division are responsible for: Maintaining and applying a comprehensive knowledge of procedural and substantive law Working productively with client agencies Developing and executing legal strategy Engaging in all aspects of affirmative and defensive discovery Timely and effective communication of case developments Leading their trial team of professional staff and investigators Conducting jury and bench trials Handling appeals The work is demanding, stimulating, and rewarding, and attorneys who enjoy leading‑edge legal issues involving State liability thrive here. The Office offers a healthy life‑work balance and a respectful, inclusive, and diverse workplace. Benefits include: Competitive salary within the range of $82,212 – $153,996 (Appendix B of the AWAAG CBA) Location is King County; 5% King County Assignment pay Longevity pay of 5% after 5 years Health and retirement benefits, including dental, vision, retirement plan, and Deferred Compensation 11 paid holidays and 1 personal holiday 8 hours sick leave per month Annual leave accrual starting at 9.33 hours per month, increasing with years of service Flex schedules and telecommuting options AGO will pay general bar dues for assignments beginning on or before January 31st Qualifying Employer for Public Loan Forgiveness Program Formal mentoring program and health and wellness program Training and career development with CLE credits Qualifications
In addition to meeting the qualifications to serve as an Assistant Attorney General, the following are desired: Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills Strong problem‑solving skills and excellent legal judgment Ability to work well in a collaborative team with litigation support, investigators, client agencies, and risk managers Ideal candidates will also offer: Five or more years of progressive legal experience with a strong civil litigation foundation Experience taking and defending depositions Active civil motions practice and working with expert witnesses Experience in alternative dispute resolution and trying cases in state and/or federal court Briefing and arguing cases on appeal and interacting with high‑level client representatives Ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds Torts and civil litigation experience is advantageous but not essential.
