Overview
Climate Central seeks a highly productive junior-to-mid-career natural or social scientist dedicated to making a strong societal impact. The scientist will sit within Climate Central’s sea-level rise program and conduct critical research, writing and outreach for our U.S. and global work. Research areas will include the interaction of sea-level rise and coastal flooding, and impacts on real estate, social equity, hazardous waste sites, coastal storm damages, wetlands and biodiversity, with a focus in the U.S. but extending globally in cases. In addition to generating high-impact papers, work will support ongoing co-development of online maps, tools and visualizations of findings for public and coastal stakeholder audiences. Climate Central is a respected nonprofit and non-advocacy organization dedicated to researching and publicizing key findings on our changing climate, its impacts and related solutions. Our scientists and communicators work together to reach large and important audiences using all tools at our disposal. Climate Central’s sea-level rise program is a recognized leader in both climate science and communication. Our peer-reviewed research has been downloaded more than 100,000 times. Our research, web tools and expert perspectives have appeared in more than 10,000 stories ranging from covers of the New York Times to local TV news features to China Daily to The Hindu. Our web assets have won more than 100 million page views, including wide and extensive use of our online tools by NGOs and governments at every level. Responsibilities
Conduct scientific research on sea-level rise impacts Collaborate with in-house and extramural scientists Lead and contribute to peer-reviewed papers Write and edit lay-accessible reports and science-based copy for web tools Serve as expert voice for media and coastal stakeholders Required Qualifications
PhD in a relevant scientific field (need not yet be a sea-level expert) Strong quantitative and data-analytic abilities Facility with Matlab, GIS, Python, R or similar; skilled in data visualization/figures Excellent written & oral communication skills; public & media speaking experience a plus Self-starter and independent worker also able to take direction and work in small team Location
The location for this position is Climate Central’s
Princeton, NJ
