Surgical Technologist II or III, Operating Room

The Surgical Technologist acts as a member of the surgical team providing patient care to the patients undergoing surgical procedures in all areas, including a variety of complex procedures, by assisting the surgeon with instrumentation. Surgical Technologist II Under some supervision, prepares the appropriate instrumentation and materials for use during and on the surgical field, passing instruments, assisting with room turnover, and performs other scrub duties as directed. Surgical Technologist III The Surgical Technologist III is an advanced level technologist with expansive knowledge of surgical procedures offered at Lucile Packard Children's Hospital. Independently prepares the appropriate instrumentation and materials for use during and on the surgical field, passing instruments, assisting with room turnover, and performing other scrub duties as directed. Essential Functions Anticipates the needs of the surgeon by passing instruments, supplies, and equipment in a timely manner. Adheres to all policies and practices for safe identification and handling of specimens and medications. Handles specimens and medications using correct technique and according to departmental policy and procedure. Provides information related to care/preparation of surgical instruments/equipment for sterilization/disinfection procedures. Performs the necessary surgical counts on sharps, small items, instruments, and sponges with the circulating nurse prior to opening, during, and after closing the incision. Prepares the surgical field by opening correct supplies and preparing instruments and equipment needed for the scheduled case. Provides indirect patient care activities such as patient transportation. Maintains aseptic technique; actively monitors situations that could lead to a breach in aseptic technique. Ensure that equipment functions properly and immediately notifies appropriate personnel of any problems. Education Completion of an accredited program recognized by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting or formal structure surgical program. Experience Surgical Technologist II: Two (2) or more years of progressively responsible and directly related work experience Surgical Technologist III: Four (4) years of progressively responsible and directly related work experience Licensure/Certification Current American Heart Association (AHA) Certification for Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers. Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) from National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) or Tech in Surgery Certification (TS-C) from National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT).
