General Summary
The Medical Assistant operates within their scope to assist with patient care duties as delegated by clinical staff. Key attributes include professionalism, excellent customer service, attention to detail, multitasking ability, and critical thinking skills.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Adhere to established safety protocols including infection control and safe patient handling. Escort patients, obtain vital signs and EKGs, verify medications and allergies, and document medical histories and visit reasons accurately and promptly. Manage phone communications, route messages, and act as a liaison between patients and providers. Communicate test results to patients and assist with follow-up calls. Assist with medication renewals, authorizations, and administration (oral, IM, SQ) as ordered. Perform point-of-care lab testing and collect specimens for laboratory analysis. Schedule appointments, surgeries, and diagnostic procedures as directed. Complete necessary paperwork including prior authorizations and referrals efficiently. Maintain supply inventory and ensure exam areas are clean and well-stocked. Educate patients on electronic health record access and assist with enrollment. Support orientation and training of new medical assistants. Demonstrate accountability, teamwork, adaptability, and maintain punctuality and attendance standards.
Education
Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant or Medical Specialist program is required, or equivalent experience. A high school diploma is mandatory.
Experience
At least one year of experience as a Medical Assistant or similar role is preferred but not required. Experience in a medical clinic setting is advantageous.
Certification/License
Preferred certification includes Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) or Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) from an accredited organization such as the American Medical Technologist (AMT). Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association is required.
Mental/Physical Requirements
This position requires significant mental focus and physical activity including lifting up to 35 lbs, walking, standing, turning, carrying, pushing, pulling, stooping, crouching, twisting, and reaching.
Working Conditions
Frequent exposure to infectious diseases and occasional encounters with hostile individuals may occur. Exposure to communicable diseases through blood and bodily fluids is common. Minimal physical discomfort is expected.
