General Summary
The Medical Assistant operates within their scope to assist with patient care duties delegated by clinical staff. The ideal candidate is organized, professional, detail-oriented, and able to multitask effectively while maintaining excellent customer service and critical thinking skills.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Adhere to established safety protocols including infection control and safe patient handling. Provide direct patient interaction such as escorting patients, obtaining vital signs and EKGs, verifying medications and allergies, and documenting medical histories and visit reasons accurately and promptly. Manage communication by routing phone messages, answering patient questions, and assisting with physician return calls. Assist with medication renewals, authorizations, and administration (oral, IM, SQ) as ordered. Perform point-of-care lab testing and collect specimens for laboratory analysis. Schedule appointments, diagnostic procedures, and surgeries as directed by providers. Complete necessary paperwork including prior authorizations and referrals in a timely manner. Maintain supply inventory and ensure exam areas are clean and well-stocked. Educate patients on electronic health record access and assist with enrollment. Support orientation and training of new medical assistants. Demonstrate accountability, teamwork, adaptability, and maintain punctuality and attendance standards.
Education
Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant or Medical Specialist program is required, or equivalent experience. A high school diploma is mandatory.
Experience
At least one year of experience as a Medical Assistant or similar role is preferred but not required. Experience in a medical clinic setting is advantageous.
Certification and Licenses
Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) or Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) credentials from an accredited organization such as AMT are preferred. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association is required.
Mental and Physical Requirements
This position requires considerable mental focus and physical activity including lifting up to 35 lbs, frequent walking, standing, turning, carrying, pushing, pulling, stooping, crouching, twisting, and reaching.
Working Conditions
Frequent exposure to infectious diseases and occasional encounters with hostile individuals may occur. Exposure to communicable diseases through blood and bodily fluids is common. Minimal physical discomfort is expected.
