Overview

Montana Technological University seeks four dedicated Instructional Designers to join our team. These grant-funded positions will collaborate with disciplinary experts to convert existing content into high-quality online delivery through an iterative process of systematic review by all contributors, including an External Advisory Board (EAB). The project aims to upskill traditional engineering degrees by expanding material accessibility, broadening dissemination, and reaching a broader student audience across engineering disciplines. Designers will work closely with subject matter experts, course facilitators, and teaching assistants to create engaging, effective, sustainable asynchronous courses that meet grant standards. Close attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and excellent communication are essential.

Responsibilities

Design top-quality asynchronous courses for professional-level students in metallurgical, geological, mining, and environmental engineering.

Assist other instructional designers with content creation, including alignment and course mapping, copyright, accessibility, multimedia development, and gamification.

Coordinate with the Director of the Center for Academic Innovation, subject matter experts, facilitators, and graduate assistants to ensure content is accurate, accessible, and logically presented.

Participate in course design reviews and revise courses as needed.

Coordinate with leadership to stay on schedule and deliver completed, teach-ready modules.

Required Qualifications

Education: BA or BS in instructional design or instructional technology, or a portfolio of completed work.

Experience teaching online in higher education.

Experience with one of the major LMS platforms (Canvas, Moodle, Blackboard, D2L, etc.).

Experience designing to meet accreditation and regulatory requirements (alignment/course mapping, intellectual property rights, RSI, accessibility).

Ability to collaborate with faculty who are experts in their fields and plan distance course design effectively.

Ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple project parts simultaneously.

Willingness to participate in regular meetings with faculty, TAs, SMEs, and other stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with Canvas LMS.

Experience in distance learning within the four engineering themes.

Experience as an online student in higher education, preferably in STEM.

Ability to apply design techniques such as backwards design, gamification, and SAMR.

Experience creating engaging content using authentic learning and assessment.

Experience with Quality Matters or similar quality assurance programs for distance learning.
