Responsibilities

  • The Custodian III performs highly complex (senior-level) custodial work, including cleaning and sanitizing state hospital buildings and treatment units.
  • Provide housekeeping services in a clinical setting, conduct inspections of buildings and equipment, and restock supplies and equipment; provide backup to other custodians as needed.
  • Work under limited supervision with considerable latitude for initiative and independent judgment.
  • Assist the Custodian Manager in implementing the hospital safety and infection control program.
  • Performs other duties as assigned, including participation in disaster response, COOP activation, and potential alternate shift patterns or locations.

Essential Duties and Working Environment

  • Attends work regularly and may be required to work specific or rotating shift schedules, including overtime as needed.
  • Maintain cleaning supplies, chemicals, and equipment; keep records of usage and building maintenance tools/equipment; perform minor repairs as needed.
  • Clean, dust, disinfect restrooms, offices, treatment areas, patient bedrooms, and other hospital areas; manage waste disposal.
  • Ensure patient units meet cleanliness, health, safety, and infection control standards; identify and follow up on problem areas.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions; lift up to 50 pounds; stand/walk on hard floors for extended periods; work irregular hours as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs)

  • Knowledge of cleaning techniques, including dusting, sweeping, mopping, and floor stripping/waxing.
  • Knowledge of inventory control; skills in using custodial materials, chemicals, and equipment; ability to operate building maintenance tools.
  • Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions; ability to stay on task and complete work timely; ability to work harmoniously with coworkers and patients.
  • Physical ability to lift 50 pounds and work in a hospital setting; ability to work irregular hours.

Qualifications and Screening

  • Initial Screening Criteria: One of the following is required: one year of custodial/housekeeping experience in custodial or environmental services in a nursing home, hospital, residential facility, hotel, or similar setting; OR eighteen (18) months proven work experience.
  • Registrations, Licensure, Certifications: None required.

Additional Information

  • Applicants must pass fingerprint criminal background check, pre-employment drug screen, and registry checks (CANRS, Nurse Aide, Medication Aide, Employee Misconduct, LEIE).
  • Males aged 18-25 must be registered with Selective Service.
  • Minimum age: 18 (Waco Center for Youth: 21).
  • Immunization and health policy compliance required; vaccination may be required or protective measures may be used.
