Overview The Medical Services Manager, while working closely with the Foster Manager, will supervise the medical department of Humane Animal Rescue of Pittsburgh, assuring that humane standards of care are met for all animals.

Responsibilities

Uphold the mission of Humane Animal Rescue throughout all responsibilities of the position.

Understand and support the Managed Admissions/Open Door Philosophy of Humane Animal Rescue.

Maintain positive relationships with co-workers, managers, directors, clients, and stakeholders.

Knowledge of multi-line phone system.

Friendly, professional and courteous manner with customers is essential.

Responsible for the management of cost-effective and quality surgery, and kennel services.

Responsible for making sure all areas of the Medical Department (exam rooms, surgical prep, surgical suites, and radiology rooms) have supplies and the medical equipment is operating properly.

Assists in accurate inventory and security of medical supplies, including DEA recordkeeping.

Provide customer service and address customer complaints as needed.

Responsible for ensuring all medical computer records are properly maintained for all shelter and owned animals.

Actively engage in agency meetings and run regularly scheduled departmental meetings.

Responsible for onboarding and ongoing training for veterinary technicians.

Perform veterinarian technician duties when needed or required.

Perform other duties as assigned by the Assistant Director of Medical Services, Director of Medical Services or Senior Director of Medical Services.

Maintain a positive relationship with all other medical managers to ensure medical needs of both departments are being met.

Assist and support the Foster Manager by assisting in direct management of the medical department and its employees and volunteers, which includes the veterinary technicians, externs and interns.

Work closely with the Foster Manager and Assistant Director of Medical Services to ensure all needs for the kennel and isolation areas are being met.

Ability to perform reviews and disciplinary actions for the medical department as needed and determined by other members of medical management.

Participate in the discussion of euthanasia decisions, if needed.

Be able to assist in Humane Investigation cases with HARP’s humane officer as needed.

Be a contact for animal control both during work hours and after hours to assist them as needed.

Be able to assist in shelter rounds, both in person and through the computer system to ensure basic needs of every animal are being met and every animal has a current pathway planned.

Responsible for ensuring all standard operating procedures for the medical department are being kept up to date and are easily accessible.

Assist in keeping foster records up to date, scheduling of foster appointments, performing foster checks and communication with foster homes as needed.

Schedule Variable work schedule including evenings and weekends.

Work Environment While performing the duties of this job, the employee could be exposed to hazards associated with aggressive animals; hazards associated with infected animals and controlled substances; exposure to unpleasant odors and noises; exposure to bites, scratches and animal wastes; possible exposure to contagious diseases. The employee will primarily be working in the shelter environment. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Physical Demands While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to bend, stand, stoop, walk, sit, talk, listen, hear; use hands to finger, manipulate, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms. The employee must be able to lift and/or move up to a minimum of 40 pounds repeatedly through the day with some assistance. Must be able to work standing for 6 or more hours. Travel This position will require working out of HARP’s North Shore and/or East End locations.

Qualifications

Must have at least 3 years of management experience and possess both administrative and leadership skills.

Must have effectively and efficiently managed a team of at least 4 people.

A veterinary technician degree and/or applicable experience as a veterinary technician.

Must have excellent customer service skills, both in person and on the phone.

Ability to work independently, self-motivated and detail oriented.

Must be able to work a flexible schedule that could include weekends, days, or evenings.

Must have a valid driver's license.

Must possess excellent animal handling skills.

Must possess basic computer skills, including Microsoft Office and Excel.

Experience with shelter software and Cornerstone.

Must be able to work standing for 6 or more hours.

Must possess ability to work efficiently and calmly under challenging conditions.

Valid Driver’s License, as incumbent will be required to travel as needed.
