Overview
Interim Controller (Defense / Manufacturing Industry) About the Company: Our client is a rapidly growing company in the national defense and law enforcement sector, providing military training services for the U.S. government and manufacturing operations. With strong growth and an increasingly complex business model, the company is seeking an Interim Controller to provide immediate leadership and build scalable accounting processes. About the Role Reporting directly to the CEO, the Interim Controller will serve as the company’s primary finance leader, balancing hands-on execution with strategic oversight. This is a hybrid role—approximately 75% Controller and 25% CFO—requiring a professional who can both manage day-to-day accounting operations and provide financial insight to guide management decision-making. The role is primarily remote, with potential for limited onsite visits.
Responsibilities
Financial Operations & Oversight Oversee and improve accounting operations across multiple entities (currently on QuickBooks, transitioning to Acumatica ERP).
Budgeting & Forecasting Develop the company’s first comprehensive budgeting process and build a framework for budget-to-actual reporting and variance analysis.
Manufacturing & E-Commerce Accounting Implement best practices for recording purchasing of raw materials, inventory, and finished goods; partner with operations to ensure accurate cost tracking and revenue recognition.
Strategic Leadership Provide financial insights to the CEO and management team to support strategic planning, growth initiatives, and the upcoming acquisition; serve as the financial liaison between internal stakeholders, outside advisors, and the tax CPA firm.
Systems & Process Improvement Support the transition to Acumatica ERP, ensuring proper accounting workflows are designed and adopted; streamline accounting policies and controls to scale with growth.
Qualifications
10+ years of progressive accounting/finance experience, with significant time in a Controller or CFO capacity.
Prior experience in manufacturing, defense, or government contracting strongly preferred.
Proven track record in budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning.
Hands-on experience with QuickBooks and Acumatica (integration experience a plus).
Strong understanding of inventory accounting and job costing.
Ability to operate independently and thrive in a fast-growing, entrepreneurial environment.
Excellent communication skills to work directly with ownership, leadership, and external partners.
