University of Miami The Sr. Research Associate 3, SOM (A) conducts highly specialized and complex research in support of the division’s goals and objectives and assumes responsibility for the successful operations of the laboratory. The incumbent supervises the activities of all laboratory staff and users and serves as subject matter expert and mentor to less experienced staff. Overview

The Sr. Research Associate 3 will be an integral part of a major scientific effort directed at the main scientific goal of The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis. This position will manage the day-to-day operations of the Imaging Core Facility including instrument maintenance and procurement, scheduling, training/consultation, billing, and budget reports. Responsibilities include image analysis methods and supervision/training of users to ensure proper instrument utilization and good laboratory standards. The person will interact with Office of Research Administration to ensure core compliance with university guidelines. Responsibilities

Contributes to basic and applied research activities by collecting and analyzing data. Understands and interprets research protocols and procedures. Maintains an overview of relevant research findings. Ensures all research is undertaken according to good research practice. Designs, evaluates, and implements methods and protocols for assigned research projects. Recommends purchase of new equipment for research projects. Writes scientific articles and manuscripts for publication and presentation. Oversees and ensures the safe handling of radioactive and hazardous materials. Prepares analytical reports relative to research data. Adheres to University and unit-level policies and safeguards University assets. Department/Core Functions

Manage the day-to-day operations of the Imaging Core Facility including instrument maintenance, procurement, scheduling, training/consultation, billing, and budget reports. Supervise and train users to ensure proper instrument utilization and maintain good laboratory standards. Interact with Office of Research Administration to ensure compliance with university guidelines. Accountabilities (For Non-exempt Employees Include Percent of Effort): train and advise students, post-doctoral fellows, staff and faculty on techniques and instrumentation; oversee procurement, maintenance and updates of equipment; provide tissue imaging/analysis services; assist in manuscript and grant preparation; perform routine microscope maintenance; collaborate with other cores to ensure redundancy; maintain and oversee the Miami Project Human Spinal Cord library and process sample requests; other duties as assigned. Master’s Degree in relevant science field (biological sciences, neuroscience preferred). Minimum 3 years of relevant experience working directly with epifluorescent and confocal microscopes and image analysis software. Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes

Skill in collecting, organizing, and analyzing data. Ability to recognize, analyze, and solve a variety of problems. Ability to exercise sound judgment in making critical decisions.
