Counselor

is a full-time position with hours Monday–Friday from 5:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The position may start temporarily remote and then onsite.

Key Responsibilities
Provide orientation to new patients about program rules, policies, procedures, and patients’ rights.
Conduct intakes, discharge planning, initial assessments, and initial treatment plans within required guidelines—as required by federal/state regulations, CARF guidelines, and Pinnacle policies.
Engage patients in assessment, treatment planning, and intervention to support their recovery.
Administer biopsychosocial assessments at intake and on an ongoing basis.
Develop individualized treatment plans using SNAP (Strengths, Needs, Abilities, and Preferences) to help patients meet short- and long-term goals.
Determine clinical necessity of counseling services based on assessments.
Monitor changes in patients’ circumstances and identify relapse indicators to promote relapse prevention.
Comply with Medical QA and Clinical Risk Management policies, including:
Evaluate high-risk conditions and administer screening tools (BAM-R, C-SSRS, GAD-7, PHQ-9).
Assess risk factors and determine appropriate treatment setting.
Coordinate with other practitioners and obtain necessary authorizations/waivers for information sharing.
Flag high-risk patients to Medical Directors/Regional Clinical Leadership and coordinate referrals as needed.
Document notes and circulate treatment team minutes to staff.
Provide professional counseling and referrals, including to second-tier medical services and community resources; offer individual and group counseling addressing relapse prevention, coping strategies, and related issues; apply counseling techniques such as CBT and Motivational Interviewing.
Schedule and document counseling sessions in the EHR; attend trainings and case conferences; participate in community relations and outreach as required.
Participate in team meetings and training; collect research data when requested; observe urine collection when required.
Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications Counselor I:
$20/hour to $21/hour
Associate degree in a relevant field with the necessary credentials to provide counseling services.
Kern County requires a bachelor’s degree or high school diploma/GED with 75% certification education.
Counselor II:
$21/hour to $24/hour
Associate degree or completion of the majority of approved counselor certification courses, license, or certification necessary to provide counseling services.
CA requirements for counselor registration/certification; 2–5 years of experience or a Master’s level degree.
Counselor III:
$24/hour to $27/hour (Certified) & $27/hour to $30/hour (Licensed)
Licensed, license-eligible, or certified; advanced clinical skills for complex cases. Certification as an Alcohol and Other Drug Counselor or current license/certification with the appropriate board. If license-eligible, maintain board requirements with supervision.
Proof of licensure or certification required to practice; credentialing prior to providing services per DHCS.
Education & Licenses Required
Technical/other training or better in Alcohol and Drug Abuse Services or related field.
Preferred
Masters or better in Psychology or related field
Bachelor’s degree in Psychology or related field
Associate’s degree or better in Human Services or related field
