Monday – Friday (8-hour schedule) during core business hours of 5 AM – 2 PM. A second shift may be added in the future, but is not currently offered. Home-to-duty station scheduling with State vehicle; statewide travel required. Voluntary overtime is available. Hazardous duty retirement plan. Opportunity to receive retirement credit for eligible military or law enforcement service. 13 paid State holidays; these are paid time off holidays and Motor Vehicle Inspectors are not required to work. Current POST-C Certified candidates do not need to re-attend the Police Academy. Ongoing professional training and career specialization available. Clothing and shoe allowances, along with other union-negotiated benefits. May require occasional work on weekends or evenings if emergency situations arise. Ongoing training prevents burnout and keeps work diverse (School Bus, HAZMAT, Motorcoach, Tanker inspections, and more). Rotate Through Specialized Units:
Each assignment offers different challenges and investigative focus, helping officers avoid the repetition common in patrol-only roles. (Subject to conditions in the Protective Services (NP-5) Bargaining Unit contract including transfer guidelines and the biennial shift/location bid process.) Specialized Units
Patrol Units – statewide traffic enforcement, post-crash CVI, and operation at fixed and virtual weigh/inspection stations; manage Commercial Truck Complaints and assist state/local police. Dealer & Towing Investigations – inspect and investigate motor vehicle dealers, repair facilities, and towing companies; handle licensing issues, consumer complaints, and fraud cases. Safety Audit Unit – conduct audits, provide education and outreach to motor carriers, and enforce federal/state commercial vehicle regulations. Auto Theft & Title Fraud Investigations – investigate cloned VINs, title fraud, recover stolen vehicles, and target attempts to register stolen out-of-state vehicles. School Bus & Student Transportation Unit – inspect all school buses and student transportation vehicles across Connecticut to ensure safety standards are met. Training
Newly hired Motor Vehicle Inspectors are required to successfully complete and maintain North American Standard Inspection (NASTI) certification. In the Department of Motor Vehicles this class is accountable for independently performing a full range of inspection and investigation activities pertaining to motor vehicles, dealer and repair facilities licensing, vehicle safety, consumer complaints, alleged offenses, and verification of documentation. Examples of Duties
Inspect motor vehicles for conformance to statutory, regulatory, and policy standards; verify ownership, authenticate VINs and related documentation. Complete forms and reports; maintain files; manage marker plates and registrations when necessary. Authenticate vehicles with missing or altered VINs; investigate misuse of marker plates and take corrective action. Inspect sites for compliance; investigate and resolve complaints against regulated businesses. Exchange information with local/state police and other agencies; explain motor vehicle laws and required actions to the public. Conduct special inspections/investigations; may impound stolen vehicles or attend court as needed. May train others in safety topics; maintain building security and perform patrols as needed. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Extensive knowledge of motor vehicles, parts, equipment, and proper repair methods. Knowledge of motor vehicle laws, regulations, and safety standards; inspection methods. Strong interpersonal, oral and written communication skills. Ability to conduct investigations, prepare written reports, operate a motor vehicle, and perform mechanical tasks. Minimum Qualifications
General Experience:
Certification as a law enforcement officer in the State of Connecticut per CSTC regulations. Note: candidates with pending recertification may be employed temporarily pending recertification. Substitutions Allowed:
Successful completion of prescribed training and probationary requirements for Protective Services Trainee. Preferred Qualifications
Experience in traffic safety, highway patrol, or commercial enforcement. Experience learning and applying motor vehicle laws and communicating with customers. Experience enforcing motor vehicle statutes and roadside enforcement; experience resolving conflicts with customers. Special Requirements
Must have authority to arrest and present violators when required by DMV regulations. Valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s license and a satisfactory driving record at appointment. Must be at least 21 years old and eligible to bear arms. Must complete inspection authority training within six months of appointment (extensions possible if training is not readily available). Candidates subject to selection standards under CT statutes and POST-C regulations. Character and Physical Requirements
Background check and references will be reviewed. Applicants must pass a physical examination if required and maintain good health, strength, stamina, and vision/auditory acuity to perform duties. Working Conditions
