WSP is initiating a search for a Full-Time Early Career Fire and Life Safety Engineer for multiple offices: Arlington, VA; Boston, MA; Columbia, MD; Dallas, TX; Houston, TX; Nashville, TN; Los Angeles, CA; and New York, NY. Be involved in projects with our Fire and Life Safety (FLS) Team and help meet client objectives with innovative technology.

Responsibilities include local technical assistance for design, development, building, testing, and inspecting fire and life safety systems on building projects in the public and private sector. Tasks may cover research, design, installation, operation, maintenance, and optimal integration of automatic sprinkler, fire alarm, mass notification, smoke control, egress analysis, and building/fire code analysis review and compliance. You will generate documentation and ensure quality that meets industry standards for design, safety, and functionality.

Responsibilities

Under general supervision, assist with collecting, compiling, and analyzing data from on-site surveys, blueprints, schematics, reports, and other sources for project development, design, and construction.

Assist with basic professional fire and life safety engineering work related to research and inspections of site conditions, equipment, resources, buildings, infrastructure, usage, and systems to determine conformance with codes and permits.

Perform routine engineering functions and provide entry-level technical assistance on design requirements, load calculations, and operating strategies for proper installation and functioning of equipment and systems.

Assist with verifying site characteristics and providing basic technical assistance on engineering and construction issues related to automatic sprinkler design, fire alarm and mass notification systems, smoke control, egress analysis, commissioning, and building/fire code analysis/review.

Generate complete, accurate documentation and specifications using electronic systems, drawings, and logs.

Comply with safety guidelines and site procedures, including data, studies, surveys, and construction documentation.

Complete training on assigned tasks.

Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and policies.

Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Qualifications Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree in Fire Protection Engineering or closely related discipline.

0 to 1 year of relevant post-education experience.

Excellent research skills with analytical mindset.

Familiarity with design/build processes and relevant mechanical system and construction codes and regulations.

Strong interpersonal and communication skills for engineering and non-engineering audiences.

Detail-oriented with ability to multi-task in a dynamic environment and work independently or as part of a team.

Basic technical writing, office software proficiency, and familiarity with design software (e.g., AutoCAD, CAM).

Commitment to workplace safety and adherence to health, safety, and harassment policies.

Ability to work schedules that may extend beyond a typical workweek; occasional travel may be required.

Preferred Qualifications

Engineer in Training (EIT) Certification.

Prior internship related to the degree and discipline.

Participation in local professional organizations.

Knowledge of REVIT and AutoCAD.

Experience in fire protection engineering design applications.

Compensation: Expected Salary (all locations): $58,200-$96,030. WSP USA reserves the right to pay more or less than the posted range based on factors including education, experience, and location.
