Pre-Labor and Admission Assessment: assess and monitor health of pregnant women at various stages of labor; gather health histories, vital signs, and physical assessments; perform non-stress tests (NSTs); monitor fetal heart tones and uterine activity; educate patients on labor and delivery processes, pain management options, and what to expect during childbirth. Labor Support and Monitoring: monitor labor progression; assess contractions, cervical dilation, fetal heart rate, and maternal vital signs; administer medications (e.g., epidurals, Pitocin) and monitor effects; provide continuous emotional support and pain management; assist with amniotomy and other procedures as directed. Assisting with Delivery: assist obstetricians or midwives during vaginal deliveries; provide instrumentation assistance and suctioning; participate in cesarean sections and provide immediate newborn care after birth; perform neonatal resuscitation and initial newborn assessment. Postpartum Care: monitor mother and newborn in immediate postpartum period; assist with breastfeeding support and newborn care education; provide postpartum recovery guidance and self-care. Documentation and Reporting: document assessments, interventions, medications, and patient progress in the electronic health record; maintain accurate records of labor and delivery processes. Collaboration and Communication: work with obstetricians, anesthesiologists, neonatologists, and other team members; communicate progress and ensure informed consent where needed. Infection Control and Safety: follow infection control procedures; ensure sterilization and proper functioning of equipment used during labor and delivery. Emergency and High-Risk Situations: recognize signs of complications and initiate or escalate care; respond to obstetric emergencies using established protocols and teamwork; manage medications and interventions for high-risk pregnancies. Patient Education and Advocacy: educate and support patients and families on labor, delivery options, newborn care, and postpartum recovery; advocate for patient preferences and informed decision-making.
