Position Summary
The Senior Social Media Content Strategist leads the strategic direction of the University of Georgia’s social media efforts to protect and enhance the institution’s reputation while advancing its mission and priorities. This position is responsible for developing, executing, and optimizing UGA’s overarching social media strategy, focusing on managing the university’s overall social media presence, leading crisis communication on social media, and supporting the Digital Dawgs program as needed. This role also supports broader digital advertising efforts, including paid social, display, search, and YouTube pre-roll, by contributing content coordination, creative ideas, and campaign insights. It works closely with colleagues in content, creative, and media relations to ensure cohesive, strategic, and high-impact digital communications. The strategist also plays a critical role in emergency communications and leads the university’s social media response efforts.
Duties/Responsibilities Social Media Strategy, Management, and Issues Management:
Monitor social media for pending/potential areas of concern
Lead the social media emergency communications team, providing strategic direction during a crisis
Make the Issues Management team aware of any pending/potential issues of concern
Provide strategic guidance for social media responses during emergency communications or moments of reputational concern
Social Media Content Strategy
Oversee and guide social media content strategy, ensuring alignment with UGA’s institutional goals
Attend editorial planning meetings and other integrated strategy meetings
Use UGA’s social media platforms to protect and promote the university’s reputation while delivering engaging content
Create, curate, and schedule engaging content for UGA’s social media accounts, delivering content that fits within UGA’s larger communications strategy
Oversee the monthly social media calendar creation for each channel and posts daily (or oversees the daily posting) on each channel
Participate in and provide social media coverage of campus events
Monitor for potential storytelling opportunities and leverage those when deemed necessary
Monitor social channels for community engagement and conversation opportunities; join the conversation through outreach and responses to follower comments and messages
Collaboration
Foster collaboration between the Marketing and Communications division and campus units to align efforts and maximize impact
Monitor campus accounts and serve as a consultant to campus units, offering guidance on social media strategy and tactics during consultations and strategy sessions
Outreach, Collaboration, and Intern Oversight
Collaborate with creative, marketing, media relations, and content teams to produce organic and paid social media content
Provide consultation and guidance on social media best practices and training on social media tools to counterparts across campus
Manage the recruitment, training, and oversight of interns, and assist with the Digital Dawgs student ambassador program
Supervise Social Media Manager
Supervise and mentor the Social Media Manager, providing direction and feedback to align with social media strategic goals
Provide opportunities for professional development and creative growth
Oversee work and provide feedback when necessary
Manage scheduling, leave, and workflow for the Social Media Manager
Digital Advertising Support and Strategy
Support the Assistant Director of Digital Marketing in the execution of paid digital campaigns
Review performance data and help identify opportunities for optimization
Coordinate with content creators and designers to deliver necessary ad assets
Project Management
Manages projects through divisional PM software, status reporting, and milestone management to ensure delivery on time, within budget, and to quality standards. Proofreads content for clarity, grammar, and spelling
Qualifications Minimum Qualifications
Requires at least a baccalaureate degree in the field. Please contact your Human Resources office for an evaluation of education/experience in lieu of the required minimum qualifications.
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, journalism, public relations, or a related field
4 – 6 years of experience managing social media strategy for a brand or large organization
Experience supervising staff
Proficiency with social media tools, analytics platforms, and content management systems
Experience with issues management and crisis communications
Experience in higher education
Familiarity with digital advertising platforms, including Meta Ads Manager, Google Ads, and YouTube
Experience using project management platforms
Demonstrated ability to collaborate across teams and manage multiple content streams in a fast-paced environment
