Overview
Sheriff's Department is recruiting for Sheriff\'s Communications Dispatcher Trainees who receive and evaluate incoming emergency (9-1-1) calls and dispatch emergency vehicles to incidents involving public safety. Positions are primarily located at the Valley Control Center in Rialto and the Desert Control Center in Hesperia. Each center serves as the primary 9-1-1 Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) for its geographic location. Multiple vacancies exist at both locations. A $2,000 hiring bonus is offered: $1,000 upon promotion to the journey-level classification and $1,000 upon successful completion of 2080 service hours in the journey-level classification. Promotion: Dispatcher Trainees are eligible for promotion to Sheriff\'s Communications Dispatcher ($67,017 - $92,102 annually) upon meeting minimum requirements, including satisfactory work performance. Incumbents must promote within eighteen (18) months or be terminated. Background: Candidates must not have been convicted of a felony and must pass an extensive background investigation including fingerprint check and polygraph; psychological evaluation may be required. Shift: Applicants must be available for all shifts; rotating shifts or on-call work on weekends, holidays, and evenings, including mandatory overtime; refusal may result in removal from the list or termination. Availability: This is a 24/7 operation with rotating, night, weekend, day, and graveyard shifts, including holidays. Sponsorship: San Bernardino County is not able to consider candidates requiring visa sponsorship at application or in the future. Keyboarding: 40 words per minute Experience: No experience required Age: Candidates must be 18 years of age at time of application Examination
Candidates who meet minimum qualifications will be invited to take the CritiCall online written test, a computer-based practical exam that evaluates keyboarding, data entry, multi-tasking, memory recall, prioritization, map reading, sentence clarity, and reading comprehension. Keyboarding speed of 40 wpm is required to pass; the CritiCall keyboarding practice test is available through the practice resources. The exam assesses ability to process dispatch information rapidly and accurately. Application Procedure
