Tampa General Hospital (TGH) has been a national leader in organ transplantation for over two decades, with more than 13,000 transplants performed to date. The TGH Transplant Institute is the highest-volume transplant center in the United States and is widely recognized for its innovation, research, and team-based care. TGH is the only hospital in West Central Florida performing adult heart, lung, kidney, pancreas, and liver transplantation. It also serves as the primary teaching hospital for the USF Health Morsani College of Medicine, with monthly GI fellow and surgery resident rotations on the Liver Transplant Service.
Our abdominal transplant programs are nationally acclaimed for exceptional outcomes, with liver and kidney transplant survival rates consistently exceeding national benchmarks (SRTR). In 2024, the Institute performed 500 kidney and 279 liver transplants. We are pioneering advancements in organ preservation through cutting-edge machine perfusion technologies and lead over 70 active clinical trials, seamlessly integrating research with clinical excellence.
TGH proudly offers an ASTS-accredited Abdominal Transplant Surgery Fellowship, providing comprehensive training in liver, kidney, and pancreas transplantation. With only one fellow accepted annually, the program ensures personalized mentorship and advanced surgical exposure, including robotic and laparoscopic techniques.
Position Highlights
This hospital-employed position includes a faculty appointment at the University of South Florida and offers a strong emphasis on both clinical excellence and academic engagement.
The role includes a roughly 50/50 split between liver and kidney transplantation.
The surgeon will perform living donor liver and kidney transplants.
There is no donor call required.
Opportunities are available to develop additional clinical niches based on experience and interest.
Clinical FTE is negotiable and may be tailored to accommodate prior experience, including grant-funded research.
The position includes active involvement in teaching and mentoring medical students, residents, and fellows.
Qualifications
MD or equivalent from an accredited School of Medicine.
Completion of an accredited residency and fellowship in transplant surgery.
Board certification in surgery and abdominal transplant surgery.
Unrestricted license to practice medicine in the State of Florida.
A minimum of three years of experience in a multi-organ transplant program is required.
Interest in academic medicine and multidisciplinary collaboration is essential.
Clinical research experience is preferred but not required.
