Position Summary The Robotics Controls Engineer is responsible for the design, programming, integration, and continuous improvement of automated systems and robotic cells within a manufacturing environment. This role ensures reliable operation of industrial robots, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), human-machine interfaces (HMIs), motion control systems, and related automation equipment to support production, quality, and safety goals. Key Responsibilities System Design & Programming Develop, modify, and optimize PLC, HMI, and robot control programs (Fanuc) for new equipment and existing systems. Design control system architectures, including network layouts, safety circuits, and motion control strategies. Specify and configure hardware such as servo drives, sensors, safety devices, and communication networks (Ethernet/IP, Modbus TCP, etc.). Lead the installation, debugging, and commissioning of robotic automation cells and assembly systems. Collaborate with mechanical and process engineers to ensure seamless equipment integration. Validate system functionality, cycle times, and safety compliance before hand-off to production. Production Support Provide technical troubleshooting for controls and robotic issues affecting uptime and quality. Train maintenance and production staff on proper use of automation systems. Establish preventative maintenance and error recovery routines to minimize downtime. Identify opportunities for automation upgrades to improve throughput, quality, and safety. Lead projects to retrofit existing lines with new robotics or advanced control strategies. Apply Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma principles to optimize cycle time and reduce waste. Compliance & Safety Ensure all controls and robotic systems meet relevant OSHA, ANSI/RIA, NFPA, and ISO/TS safety standards. Implement and validate safety interlocks, e-stops, and guarding systems. Qualifications Education: Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or related field (or equivalent experience). Experience: 3+ years of experience in automation, robotics, or controls engineering (automotive supplier experience preferred). Proven background in PLC programming (Automation Direct Productivity Series), robot programming (Fanuc), servo programming (Festo, Mitsubishi, SMC, etc) and vision system programming (Keyence and Cognex) . Hands-on experience with motion control, sensors, vision systems, and fieldbus communications. Skills: Strong troubleshooting skills in both hardware and software. Knowledge of safety standards (ANSI/RIA R15.06, NFPA 79). Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and deliver on deadlines. Excellent communication and cross-functional teamwork skills. Preferred Experience in automotive manufacturing environments. Familiarity with MES/SCADA systems and Industry 4.0 concepts. Project leadership or vendor management experience. Professional certifications (e.g., TUV Functional Safety, Fanuc Certified Robot Programmer). Manufacturing plant setting with exposure to automated equipment, noise, and moving machinery. Requires occasional off-shift or weekend support during commissioning or troubleshooting. Travel to our Mexico plant may be required (5-15%).
