Overview
Campus Police Officer - Part-Time role at Blue Ridge Community College (BRCC) located in Augusta. This is a part-time wage position, limited to 1500 hours within a 12-month period, with no benefits. Initial and continued employment are conditioned upon meeting the requirements and standards of the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services for police officers in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The position ensures the safety of students and employees through police and security services, supports Public Safety operations, provides or facilitates training to the campus community, and maintains positive relationships with local law enforcement. BRCC is a regionally recognized institution with a 55+ year history of offering degrees, certificates, and workforce training programs. Working schedule varies, with some evenings and weekends required. Some flex scheduling may be available; 3rd shift hours are not required. A fingerprint-based criminal history check will be required of the finalist candidate. Duties / Responsibilities
Responsible for routine patrols and security coverage when college classes and special events are held; conduct periodic inspections of facilities on and off campus. Engage in community policing and maintain relationships with state and local police agencies. Provide information, directions, and assistance to the campus and surrounding community. Respond to, investigate, and report on incidents such as personal and vehicular accidents, theft, disorderly conduct, property damage, crimes against persons, fires, bomb threats, and suspected crimes. Inspect, test, and maintain emergency equipment and supplies to ensure readiness. Monitor problem areas via surveillance cameras or other means. Enforce college parking and traffic regulations and direct/ control traffic as needed. Respond to emergencies on campus and coordinate building evacuations during fires and bomb threats. File and store investigative records and related documents; maintain daily report logs and correspondence pertaining to campus police and security. Coordinate enforcement policies and resolve student-related disciplinary issues with appropriate college officials. Act as police on the Threat Assessment Team in accordance with the Code of Virginia. Assist with preparation of reports for statistical crime data to meet Clery Act requirements; prepare BRCC Annual Security and Crime Report (Clery Report) for submission to the U.S. Department of Education. Enforce campus parking/traffic regulations; issue citations and assist with issuing parking passes and College IDs. May conduct intake meetings related to complaints; arrange for supportive measures for students and/or employees; collaborate with Title IX Investigators as necessary. Perform duties as a certified basic first aid, CPR, and AED responder; replenish first-aid supplies campus-wide. Assist with policy development and review to enhance compliance with Title IX and related laws; may serve in other Title IX roles. Provide advice, information, and guidance on safety and security issues; participate in college governance, committee work, and special projects as appropriate; may serve as a standing member of the Health, Safety, and Human Resources Committee. Note: A fingerprint-based criminal history check is required for finalists. Additional assignments and duties may be assigned as needed. Qualifications and Requirements
Must Possess certification from the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services to serve as a duly sworn officer of the law Possess certification or be able to complete required training to provide basic first aid, including CPR/AED Qualify in use of a firearm with a minimum score of 80% and be trained in the use of OC spray Maintain National Incident Management System (NIMS) training Certifications ICS-100, 200, 300, 400, 700, and 800 Possess or be able to obtain a valid Virginia driver’s license Be able to carry equipment and cover a large expanse of buildings and grounds on foot Experience in the use of public safety / emergency management software; including emergency notification systems, access control, camera surveillance systems, and incident reporting KSA / Required Qualifications Thorough knowledge of the principles of law enforcement and emergency management and the related governing laws and regulations Thorough knowledge of law enforcement and crisis management techniques, including crime prevention, investigation, suspect apprehension, disaster management, and reporting Thorough knowledge of federal and state laws and procedures related to campus safety, security and emergency crisis preparedness Excellent verbal and written communication skills Strong computer, word processing, and spreadsheet skills Ability to work effectively with others and to provide customer service Ability to plan, organize, and complete work within deadlines Ability to manage multiple tasks and resolve discrepancies Education and training and/or combination of training/experience equivalent to a two-year degree in criminal justice or a related field Additional Considerations Work experience in a college, school, or institutional environment is desirable Other
