Under general direction, the Associate Engineer performs professional engineering work in the field and office and supervises the work of junior and assistant engineers, technicians, inspectors, surveyors and other related personnel engaged in engineering projects. The essential functions may include: Preparing engineering designs, drawings and specifications; preparing cost and quantity estimates for labor, materials and equipment for construction, contracts, installation, repair, restoration and maintenance. Providing engineering support to operations staff; reviewing existing conditions and conducting studies by identifying, obtaining and analyzing samples and data; analyzing and resolving problems to ensure compliance with regulatory and performance standards. Supervising the preparation of detailed engineering drawings, specifications and calculations; assigning and reviewing the work of subordinate staff and consultants; determining resources needed to complete work. Reviewing plans, permit applications and specifications developed by staff, consultants and contractors; verifying quantities, dimensions, safety requirements and quality of work for engineering projects. Preparing and supervising the preparation of a wide variety of technical engineering reports and other documentation; interviewing, selecting, training, monitoring, evaluating and counseling staff. Preparing a variety of bid documents; reviewing and analyzing bids; conducting meetings and making presentations; performing related duties as required. Qualifications
1. Three (3) years of verifiable professional engineering experience, of which two (2) years must be equivalent to the City & County of San Francisco Class 5203 Assistant Engineer or higher. AND 2. Possession of a current Certificate of Registration as a Professional Engineer in California in Civil, Mechanical, Chemical, or Environmental Engineering. Substitutions
Candidates licensed in other states who meet minimum requirements and lack the California license may file and be placed under waiver on the eligible list until the California license is presented. There is no substitution for the required two years of work experience equivalent to a 5203 Assistant Engineer or higher. Masters degree in Environmental Engineering may substitute for one year of work experience in the environmental specialty. Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering may substitute for two years of work experience in the environmental specialty. There is no general waiver for City and County of San Francisco employees with six months of experience as a 5203 Assistant Engineer but less than required for this position. License or Certificate
Working Conditions
Some positions may require lifting up to 50 pounds; climbing ladders; working in high places and confined spaces; exposure to various weather conditions and outdoors; bending, sitting, and walking for extended periods and over uneven surfaces. Some positions may require specific schedules including weekends, holidays, part-time, nights, and/or overtime. Verification:
