Join our newest team at Gateway West shelter, supporting the most vulnerable populations in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Schedule Full‑time, On‑site. Includes weekends and holidays as needed. Schedule subject to change to meet the needs of shelter operations.
About Gateway West Gateway West is Albuquerque’s largest shelter, serving an average of 600 people per night. The center is open year‑round, offering meals, a warm overnight bed, and secure under‑bed storage. Shuttle service is provided daily. The team provides access to trauma‑informed services such as case management and job searching. The goal is to guide guests through a successful exit from the shelter to safe, stable housing.
Position Summary The Shelter Dorm Monitor is responsible for maintaining a safe, clean, and supportive environment within the shelter dormitory. This role involves overseeing resident activities, ensuring compliance with shelter policies, and providing support to individuals experiencing homelessness. The Dorm Monitor plays a key role in fostering a sense of community and respect among residents.
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma/GED or equivalent experience; social services or related field experience preferred.
Prior experience working in a shelter, community organization, or social service setting.
For driving roles: valid driver’s license & CDL (not all positions require driving; this will be discussed during the interview to determine comfort and qualification).
Other Competencies
Understanding of homelessness issues and available community resources.
Familiarity with the critical importance of trauma‑informed care.
Ability to cultivate trust and respect to help participants navigate challenges toward stability and recovery.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
Calm and professional in stressful situations.
Compassionate and non‑judgmental attitude toward individuals experiencing homelessness.
Teamwork and independent work capability.
Strong problem‑solving and conflict resolution skills.
Basic computer skills for record‑keeping and reporting.
