Physician (MD/DO) - Rheumatologist

Summary Physicians in the VA – Rheumatology practice provide subspecialty care, lead inpatient consults, and support resident and student training. Clinical privileges are provided within the VA system.
Responsibilities
Provide oversight of all aspects of rheumatologic care delivered to assigned patients.
Assist fellows, residents, medical students, and nurse practitioners in patient evaluation and treatment; provide corrective actions when complications occur.
Assess hospitalized patients (ward and ICU) for changes in joint and rheumatologic conditions; enter history, physical and treatment plan within 24 hrs.
Offer timely recommendations for primary care patients referred to specialty clinic; communicate via e‑Consult or CPRS note.
Maintain all VA‑mandated certifications (BLS, ACLS, airway management) and complete mandatory VA training modules.
Staff rheumatologists with VA research and grant activity; adhere to VA research policies.
Provide urgent assessments and interventions during scheduled tour hours; participate in hospital committees and quality improvement.
Educate and supervise graduate and undergraduate medical education and scientific research as permitted.
Work Schedule Part‑time/full‑time available; Monday‑Friday, 8 am‑5 pm.
Requirements
U.S. citizenship; non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens.
Proficient in written and spoken English.
Selective Service Registration required for males born after 12/31/1959.
Must pass background/security investigation and pre‑employment physical examination.
Complete seasonal influenza vaccination program.
Complete all application requirements detailed in the “Required Documents” section.
Serve a 2‑year trial period during which performance will be evaluated; continued employment contingent upon advancement of the public interest.
Qualifications
Valid, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in any U.S. state, territory, or D.C.
Graduate of an ACGME or AOA accredited residency; board certification in Rheumatology or eligibility accepted.
Experience as a practicing rheumatologist with demonstrated patient care, teaching, and quality improvement.
Board eligibility or board certification in Rheumatology is required.
Preferred: Musculoskeletal ultrasound experience.
