Recruitment Incentive (Sign-on Bonus)

May be available for highly qualified candidates.

Education Debt Reduction Program (Student Loan Repayment)

Eligible for EDRP, a student loan payment reimbursement program. Must meet eligibility and submit application within 4 months of start date.

Up to $200,000 reimbursement over 1 to 5 years.

Former participants are ineligible.

Pay

Competitive salary, annual performance bonus, regular salary increases.

Paid Time Off

50-55 days per year: 26 days annual leave, 13 days sick leave, 11 paid federal holidays, 5 days paid absence for CME.

No Physician Employment Contract and no significant restriction on moonlighting.

Responsibilities

Administer anesthesia to patients rendering them insensitive to pain during surgery/procedures.

Provide continuous and vigilant monitoring of the patient's physical response to the anesthetic, sedatives, analgesics, and related anesthetic agents.

Maintain excellence in endotracheal intubation and extubation, airway management, and be skilled in the usage of all various airway adjuncts.

Make a reasonable anesthetic plan for patients with severe comorbidities.

Perform appropriately credentialed techniques of the anesthetic plan such as, but not limited to, insertion of intravenous lines, arterial lines, central lines, insertion of other invasive monitoring catheters, regional anesthesia, and TEE.

Interpretation of arterial blood gases, EKGs and all relevant pre, intra, and postoperative laboratory results.

Perform pre-anesthetic evaluation of the patients.

Develop an anesthetic plan and make the selection of anesthetic agents and techniques.

Manage the anesthesia process to include induction, maintenance, and emergence from general, regional, monitored anesthesia cases, and satellite anesthesia care.

Manage postoperative pain needs for any anesthetized patient.

Recognize abnormal patient responses to and to initiate corrective measures.

Determine the need for additional laboratory tests.

Provide resuscitative care as necessary.

Evaluate and manage the patient in the immediate post-operative period.

Administer IV fluids relative to the patient’s medical history and surgical procedure.

Administer blood products and monitor for adverse responses.

Appropriately document the patient status in the anesthesia record.

Teach and evaluate residents and students.

Assume responsibility and be accountable for controlled substances according to department and hospital policy, as well as state and federal guidelines, etc.

Work Schedule Monday-Friday, 7:00am-3:30pm with on call on some weekdays and weekends.

Requirements

U.S. Citizenship; non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.

Must be proficient in written and spoken English.

Must pass pre-employment physical examination.

Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP).

Qualifications

United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.

Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.

Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. Approved residencies are ACGME and/or AOA; additional residencies may be used if the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems appropriate.

Board Certification/Board Eligibility Required.

Proficient in pain procedures such as Radiofrequency Ablation, Lumbar Epidural Steroid Injection, Selective Nerve Root Block, Epidural Steroid Injections, Medial Branch Blocks.

Proficient in placement of Nerve stimulators.

Proficient in Joint and Bursa Injections.

Proficient in MILD Procedure to treat Lumbar Spinal Stenosis (LSS).

Knowledge of administering sedatives and opioids specific to pain procedures.

Knowledge of sedations practices specific to pain procedures.

Knowledge of adverse reactions to pain procedures and how to properly treat reaction(s).

Familiar with inner workings of a pain clinic.

Must be pain fellowship trained.

Education Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from an institution whose accreditation was in place for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are:

Schools of medicine accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) for the year in which the degree was granted, or

Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation of the American Osteopathic Association for the year in which the degree was granted.

For foreign medical graduates not covered in (1) or (2) above, facility officials must verify with the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) that the applicant has met requirements for certification, and must obtain a copy of the ECFMG certificate, if claimed by the applicant. [If the applicant does not claim an ECFMG certificate, facility officials must still confirm that the medical school meets (or met) ECFMG eligibility requirements for the year the candidate graduated.]
