Job Summary The Assistant Director manages and supports day‑to‑day operations of all facilities, programming, and services of the department. Provides oversight for recreational programs, facilities, and services to the Modesto Maidique Campus (MMC) and Biscayne Bay Campus (BBC) communities through the operation and administration of aquatics, sport clubs, fitness and wellbeing, informal recreation, intramural sports, marketing, membership/outreach, outdoor adventure, student development, reservation/rentals, special events, outdoor walking/jogging trail, tennis and pickleball. Reports directly to the Associate Director of Facility Operations.

Responsibilities

Manage day‑to‑day operations of all recreation facilities including Wellness and Recreation Centers, aquatics center, outdoor turf complexes, high ropes course, outdoor basketball courts, sand volleyball courts, outdoor walking/jogging trail, and outdoor tennis/pickleball courts.

Recruit, hire, train, mentor, and evaluate 150 student employees including building supervisors, facility attendants and event student staff. Provide leadership experience through direct management of facilities.

Assist in development and management of assigned budgets including short and long‑term capital replacement plans. Recommend purchases of equipment for assigned facility areas ensuring compliance with department best practices and university policies.

Develop and maintain area‑specific manuals and training sessions related to facilities policies and procedures including Fusion.

Collaborate with Membership & Outreach to effectively solve customer service issues.

Manage informal recreation activities and schedules.

Supervise, mentor, and motivate Coordinators of Facilities and Operations. Provide ongoing support and professional development opportunities for direct reports.

Prepare and approve student employee payroll.

Communicate and support department goals and objectives that align with the mission, vision, and values of the Division of Academic and Student Affairs.

Assist in development and ongoing review of facility guidelines to ensure a safe recreational environment.

Assist in development of assessment and evaluation tools to improve facility operations and services. Provide ongoing feedback and recommendation on facility and operations enhancements.

Serve as a University card user for departmental transactions. Adhere to University credit card policies and procedures.

Provide ongoing support for programming, services, reservations, and rentals.

Assist with development and implementation of all risk management plans and trainings for Campus Recreation. Ensure all facilities follow State and Federal statutes, industry standards and best practices.

Oversee preparation for conversion to hurricane shelter for Monroe County as needed. Serve as Shelter Manager when necessary.

Perform essential duties in any emergency such as hurricanes, public health emergencies, and/or any other university emergency closing. Expect to be available to report to work as needed during university emergency closing with appropriate notification of a department administrator.

Handle sensitive cardholder information and/or process credit card transactions for the department/unit.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree and four (4) years of experience in a related field; OR Master’s degree and two (2) years of experience in a related field.

CPR/Standard First Aid Certification or must obtain certification within 45 days of employment.

Desired Qualifications

Five (5) years of supervisory experience of full‑time staff in collegiate recreation preferred.

Ability to work flexible hours as needed.

Travel to FIU Campus.

Ability to work occasional evenings, weekends, and holidays.
