National Geographic Society . The headquarters in Washington, D.C., is undergoing a major campus renovation (Base Camp) to complete the new National Geographic Museum of Exploration by 2026. The museum will feature a pavilion, auditorium, photo gallery, immersive walk‑through, retail, food and beverage, education center, archives, tours, event space, and a one‑of‑a‑kind nighttime courtyard experience.

The Safety Technician works closely with the Director of Security, Health & Safety to maintain a safe, healthy working environment for staff, tenants, and visitors. Responsibilities include evaluating and mitigating workplace hazards, ensuring regulatory compliance, supporting a culture of safety through inspections, training, and incident response, and maintaining safety documentation related to workplace safety, equipment usage, and hazardous materials.

Responsibilities

Conduct safety audits, inspections, and job hazard analyses (JHAs) across facilities; identify risks and recommend corrective actions (30%).

Manage and maintain the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) inventory system; ensure all chemical‑using departments keep current SDS logs and train staff (20%).

Oversee compliance with safety standards related to equipment use (e.g., aerial lifts, forklifts, pallet jacks); coordinate preventive maintenance and certify operators (15%).

Support and coordinate OSHA‑required training (Hazard Communication, Bloodborne Pathogens, PPE, Fire Safety); provide regular safety training to employees and management (15%).

Investigate accidents and incidents, determine root causes, and assist with corrective action plans; recommend preventive measures (10%).

Maintain safety records, inspections, and incident reports per regulatory and organizational requirements (10%).

Qualifications

Associate’s degree required; Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety or a related field preferred.

Minimum of 3+ years of professional experience in workplace safety, environmental health and safety (EHS), or a related field.

Experience supporting OSHA compliance and safety program implementation strongly preferred.

Experience conducting safety inspections, hazard assessments, and delivering employee safety training.

Familiarity with maintaining SDS records, investigating incidents, and developing corrective action plans.

Certifications

IATA (International Air)

IMDG (International Maritime)

DOT 49CFR (U.S. Domestic)

Radioactive and IATA Lithium Batteries

OSHA 1910 General Industry and OSHA 1926 Construction

First Aid/CPR/AED (American Red Cross or equivalent)

Strongly preferred certifications:

OSHA 30‑Hour (General Industry or Construction)

Occupational Health & Safety Technician (OHST) or Certified Safety Professional (CSP)

Necessary Knowledge & Skills

Knowledge of OSHA standards and regulations (1910, 1926)

Ability to conduct safety audits, write incident reports, and deliver safety training

Ability to develop and support safety programs

Familiarity with SDS systems and chemical safety requirements

Experience with safety inspection tools or reporting systems

Strong attention to detail, communication skills, and ownership of responsibilities

Integrity, self‑motivation, teamwork, and independent work capability
