Overview The Delaware Department of Correction (DOC) awards a $10,000 signing bonus to new employees. The DOC Employee Signing Bonus Program provides Recruitment Incentives to new DOC employees in accordance with the DOC Employee Signing Bonus Program. The program may be terminated by the Department of Correction at any time with or without notice.

Responsibilities

Apply food service principles, practices and methods governing food preparation activities to ensure safe handling, proper storage, temperature control and compliance with safety and sanitary standards.

Instruct inmate, youth or food service workers in the operation of commercial kitchen equipment such as dishwashers, ovens, toasters, meat slicers, choppers, deep fryers, food processors, steam pots, blenders and mixers.

Instruct food service workers in food preparation, cooking, safe food handling and storage.

Supervise kitchen assignments, directing activities and establishing a positive working relationship.

Maintain a supportive relationship with food service workers through active listening skills and guidance as needed.

Prepare and cook meals.

Control kitchen utensils, tools and equipment.

Enforce rules, regulations, policies and procedures in maintaining discipline, order, security and housekeeping of assigned locations and staff.

Enforce personal hygiene rules for food service workers to maintain sanitary standards.

Prepare reports and maintain accurate records.

Attend approved training courses.

Requirements

Possession of a Serve Safe Certification.

Three years of experience in proper safety, storage and sanitation standards for food items.

Six months of experience in food service management such as prioritizing and organizing food service activities, large‑scale menu planning, pricing and cost control, procurement and inventory control.

Six months of experience in staff supervision, including planning, assigning, reviewing and evaluating the work of others.

Knowledge of developing policies or procedures.

Possession of a valid driver’s license (not suspended, revoked or cancelled).

Salary and Benefits Selected incumbent’s annual base salary starts at $40,380. Upon successful completion of the Correctional Employee Initial Training (CEIT) course and assignment to a facility, salary increases to $45,000. The incumbent is eligible for a 5% shift differential for four or more hours worked between 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 a.m. The CEIT program is approved by the Veterans Administration of Delaware State Approving Authority for the training of Veterans.

DOC Special Requirements Prior to institutional assignment, candidates must successfully complete all phases of an eleven‑week Correctional Officer Basic Course, administered by the Department of Correction Steven R. Floyd Sr. Training Academy. The course includes physical, classroom and hands‑on training in inmate supervision, defensive tactics, riot control, weapons, report writing and emergency medical training.

Hiring Process Applications are evaluated based on a rating of education, training and experience relative to job requirements. Applicants must complete a pre‑employment baseline two‑step tuberculin skin test (TST), a criminal background check, physical ability test, approved psychological examination, pre‑employment drug test and medical examination. Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States and submit a valid E‑Verify Form I‑9.
