Retail Operations Manager – PetSmart
PetSmart’s Process Leader (Retail Operations Manager) has shared responsibility to drive operational excellence in our stores while upholding the company’s vision, mission, values, and strategy. This role is accountable for merchandising and inventory management, pet care operations, opening and/or closing the store, leading associates, financial outcomes and maintaining a safe and organized environment.
Responsibilities
People Leadership: Participates in employment decisions such as recruiting, interviewing, and coaching. Facilitates the associate experience and supports associate development; including training, onboarding, reviews, labor management, mentoring, succession planning, and coaching for accountability. Addresses and administers associate complaints and grievances. Prioritizes, delegates, and validates daily tasks for associates to meet business and pet parent needs. Leads and coaches associates on proper operational processes to ensure pets in our care are safe and healthy. Coordinates staffing coverage for key areas of the store (pet care maintenance, hotel cleaning, salon cleaning, etc.). Validates completion of operational messages and engagement video compliance. Communicates company information and priorities to associates to ensure alignment. Recognizes and celebrates associates driving engagement. Overall Store Experience: Accountable for the healthcare of store-owned pets, inventory management and pricing processes (receiving, stocking, counts, rotations, planner/planogram sets). Evaluates operations to identify opportunities for improvement. Maintains vendor relationships, backroom standards, and communication boards. Oversees Buy Online and Pick Up In Store and Ship From Store programs. Identifies sales trends through analysis and merchandising activities. Makes sound merchandising decisions regarding discretionary space and discontinued merchandise. Maintains store standards and promotes a culture of compliance to Policies & Procedures and Code of Ethics. Ensures a safe environment for associates, pets, and pet parents. Takes action and reports when a sick/injured pet is identified in store. Shares responsibilities for opening and closing procedures and addresses pet parent concerns. Expense Management: Drives opportunities to grow the business and holds associates accountable for achieving store P&L targets. Analyzes inventory management reporting to identify trends and root causes. Manages expenses such as labor and supplies and coordinates store-related work orders with Home Office partners. Qualifications
3+ years of retail leadership or experience in a customer-focused environment. Full-time availability, schedule flexibility, and ability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed. Proficiency in computer applications. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Ability to react under pressure and maintain composure. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, including maintaining an appealing store layout. Supervisory Responsibility
Typically oversees up to three lead associates and up to forty non-leader associates. Responsible for employment decisions and associate development. Physical Demands and Work Environment
Stand, walk, climb a ladder, and use hands to handle, feel, hold, write, etc. Requires depth perception. Reasonable accommodations may be made for disabilities to perform essential functions. Frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds; occasional team lifts beyond 100 pounds. Exposure to live animals and pet hair; moderate noise levels with possible higher exposure during peak times.
