Under the direction of the Admitting Manager, the Patient Access Representative is responsible for interviewing incoming patients (inpatient, outpatient, and emergency department) to obtain all pertinent data for admission and produce a complete and accurate admission record. This includes medical record information, as well as demographic and financial related information. The role answers inquiries related to admissions, collects deposits or payments, interacts with nursing units and ancillary departments, and provides directions to various areas within the hospital.
Responsibilities
Acknowledging patients or guests and their requests
Appearing professional in dress, grooming and hygiene
Assist in the training of new employees
Demonstrate awareness and sensitivity to the rights of patients and significant others
Document financial arrangements in patient accounts; notify Admitting Manager or Business Office Manager of problem accounts
Exhibit tact and discretion in all working relationships
Maintain safety awareness and report unsafe conditions
Uphold high service standards regarding patient care; make patients\' needs the first priority
Work cross-trained in Inpatient, Outpatient, Bed Board, and Emergency Room
Familiar with Hospital layout to direct patients or guests appropriately
Physically able to push a wheelchair
Meet staffing needs, including overtime, holidays, and shift changes
Remain informed and compliant with HIPAA, EMTALA, FDCPA, Medicare Secondary Payer, and other relevant laws
Remain informed regarding PPO, HMO, Medicare, Medi-Cal, and indigent program requirements
Offer assistance promptly, cordially, and completely
Comfortable with sick patients; summon medical assistance when needed; BLS certified annually
Monitor patient valuables in accordance with hospital policy
Perform other duties as assigned
Promote unity and teamwork among co-workers and departments
Handle confidential information appropriately at work and away from the facility
Complete the patient\'s electronic medical record and route paperwork appropriately and timely
Obtain Advance Directive information and ensure accurate data entry
Discuss financial responsibility with patients; collect deposits and co-pays where applicable; arrange payment when needed
Provide information on hospital requirements and complete promissory notes as necessary
Gather all patient-related information for a complete admission record (medical record numbers, current data, insurance cards, IDs, signatures, and demographic information) and participate in quality improvement activities
Explain consent forms and advance directives to patients to ensure informed signatures
Meet department productivity goals (minimum of 20 patients registered per shift) and maintain an account accuracy rate of at least 80%
Complete and print shift logs in the Emergency Department

Minimum: High School diploma or equivalent
