Patient Access Rep - ED - Registration ED - Per Diem 8 Hours Variable Shifts (Union, Non-Exempt) at Keck Medicine of USC. Position Summary: Under the direction of the Admitting Manager, the Patient Access Representative is responsible for interviewing incoming patients (inpatient, outpatient, and emergency department) to obtain all pertinent data for admission and produce a complete and accurate admission record. This includes medical record information, as well as demographic and financial related information. The representative answers inquiries related to admissions, collects deposits or payments, interacts with nursing units and ancillary departments, and provides directions to various areas within the hospital. Essential Job Functions And Core Responsibilities

Acknowledge patients or guests and their requests. Present a professional appearance in dress, grooming, and hygiene. Assist in the training of new employees. Demonstrate awareness and sensitivity to patient rights and those of significant others. Document financial arrangements in patient accounts and notify managers of problem accounts requiring special attention. Exhibit tact and discretion in all working relationships. Be aware of safety issues and report unsafe conditions appropriately. Uphold high service standards regarding patient care and make patient needs a priority. Be cross-trained in inpatient, outpatient, bed board, and emergency room areas; be familiar with the hospital layout to direct patients appropriately. Must be physically able to push a wheelchair and willing to meet staffing needs, including overtime, holidays, and shift changes. Remain informed and compliant with HIPAA, EMTALA, Fair Debt and Collection Practices Act, Medicare Secondary Payer, and other laws and regulations governing Patient Financial Services. Remain informed regarding PPO, HMO, Medicare, Medi-Cal and indigent service programs for timely processing of claims. Provide prompt, cordial, and complete assistance; patient care is the utmost priority in all aspects of registration. Must be BLS certified annually. Monitor patient valuables in accordance with hospital policy; perform other duties as assigned. Promote unity and teamwork across departments. Handle confidential information appropriately; complete patient electronic medical records and send required paperwork to the proper destinations in a timely fashion. Obtain Advance Directive information from inpatient, ER, OPS, and bed patients; enter accurate data in systems and on the Conditions of Admission. Explain financial responsibilities to patients; collect deposits from self-paying patients and co-payments from insured patients as required; arrange financing if needed and complete promissory notes when necessary. Collect all patient-related information to produce a complete and accurate patient admission record (e.g., correct medical record numbers, current patient data, insurance cards, signatures, and demographic information). Understand and participate in the organization-wide Performance Improvement Program through orientation, education, and quality control activities. Understand Consent forms, Advance Directives, and other required forms to ensure patients are well informed before signatures are obtained. Meet department productivity goals, including registering a minimum of 20 patients per shift and maintaining an account accuracy rate of at least 80%. Complete shift logs in the Emergency Department. Complete required courses within designated timelines and pass competency tests as required. Job Requirements

Education: Minimum - High School diploma or equivalent. Work Experience: Minimum - 2 years of customer service experience. Licenses and Certifications: Must be BLS certified or provide BLS certificate within 30 days of hire. M.A.B. certification required; new hires must obtain within 6 months of hire. Pay Transparency: The hourly salary rate range for this position is $25.75 - $34.65.
