Patient Access Rep-ED - Registration ED - Full Time 8 Hours Evening (3:00PM to 11:30PM) (Union, Non-Exempt) | Keck Medicine of USC | Arcadia, California POSITION SUMMARY Under the direction of the Admitting Manager, the Patient Access Representative is responsible for interviewing incoming patients (inpatient, outpatient, and emergency department) to obtain all pertinent data for admission and produce a complete and accurate admission record. This includes medical record information, as well as demographic and financial related information. Is responsible for answering all inquiries related to admissions, collects deposits or payments, interacts with the nursing units and ancillary departments and provides directions to various areas within the hospital.
Responsibilities
Acknowledging patients or guests and their requests
Appearing professional in dress, grooming and hygiene
Assists in the training of new employees
Demonstrates awareness and sensitivity to the rights of patients and significant others, as identified within the situation
Document any financial arrangements made in the patient's account notes. Notifies the Admitting Manager or Business Office Manager of all problem accounts that require special attention
Exhibiting concern, tact and discretion in all working relationships
Functions with an awareness of safety issues and reports unsafe issues appropriately, as identified within the institution
Upholds the highest service standards regarding patient care; patient care is the utmost priority in all aspects of registration
Making patients' needs the first priority
Must be able to work and be cross trained in Inpatient, Outpatient, Bed Board, and Emergency Room areas
Must be familiar with the hospital layout to direct patients or guests to the proper destination
Must be physically able to push a wheelchair
Willing to meet staffing needs of the department and be available to work overtime, holidays, and shift changes
Remain informed and compliant with HIPAA, EMTALA, the Fair Debt and Collection Practices Act, Medicare Secondary Payer, and other laws and regulations governing Patient Financial Services
Remain informed regarding PPO, HMO, Medicare, Medi-Cal and indigent service programs and requirements for timely processing of claims
Offer assistance promptly, cordially, and completely
Register patients promptly with attention to patient care and safety
Obtain advance directive information from inpatient, ER, OPS, and bed patients; enter accurate data in the computer and ensure proper paperwork is sent to the proper destination
Explain financial responsibilities to patients; collect deposits on self-paying patients and co-payments when required by insurance
Speak with patients about hospital requirements and make financial arrangements; complete promissory notes when necessary
Gather all patient-related information to produce a complete and accurate admission record, including choosing medical record numbers, collecting current data, photocopying insurance cards and IDs, obtaining authorizations and signatures, and ensuring accurate insurance and demographic information
Participate in organization-wide Performance Improvement activities through orientation, education, and quality control
Understand and obtain consent forms, advance directives, and other required forms so patients are well informed before signatures are obtained
Meet department productivity goals (e.g., registering a minimum of 20 patients per shift) and maintain an account accuracy rate of at least 80%
Complete shift logs in the Emergency Department
Complete required courses within the specified timelines and competency testing for current employees
Qualifications Education Minimum - High School diploma or equivalent
Work Experience Minimum - 2 years of customer service experience
Licenses and Certifications Minimum Must be BLS certified or provide BLS certification within 30 days of hire. M.A.B. certification required; new hires must obtain within 6 months of hire.
Pay Transparency The hourly salary rate range for this position is $25.75 - $34.65.
