Position: Assistant Director for Leadership & Mental Performance
Department: Athletics, Teevens Center, Dartmouth Peak Performance (DP2)
Position Purpose: The Assistant Director for Leadership & Mental Performance will help design and deliver evidence-based leadership and mental performance programs for varsity athletes and the wider undergraduate student body through the Teevens Center. The position advances two pillars: elevating the competitiveness of Dartmouth Athletics and DP2 for All – extending peak performance principles across campus.
Responsibilities
Varsity Athletics – Leadership & Mental Performance Support: Deliver leadership development and mental performance programs for assigned varsity teams, including team workshops, small-group sessions, and one-on-one coaching for student-athletes; provide targeted consultation to coaches; collaborate with the DP2 team to align services with departmental goals and best practices.
Leadership Development: Design and deliver leadership programming (sophomore summer initiatives, team-based projects, retreats, guest speaker sessions); facilitate workshops on communication, emotional intelligence, and value-based leadership; create supporting resources (digital content, handouts).
Mental Performance Support: Conduct assessments to identify needs; provide real-time support by attending select practices and competitions; identify mental health concerns early and refer to counseling services; operate and introduce teams to the Mental Performance Lab’s cognitive training tools; evaluate program impact and apply feedback for improvements.
DP2 for All Programming & Student Engagement: Adapt and deliver leadership and mental performance programming for the wider Dartmouth student community; develop embedded learning experiences and peer-led initiatives; coordinate with campus partners for scheduling and integration; design pilot programs with assessment measures.
Collaboration & Operations: Work with stakeholders across Athletics, the Teevens Center, and Student Affairs; track participation and engagement metrics; support communications to highlight programs and outcomes.
Qualifications Required Education and Experience
Masters or equivalent combination of education and experience
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Master’s degree in sport psychology, counseling education, leadership, or related field.
2–5 years of experience in leadership development, sport psychology, or mental performance.
Experience with student-athletes, college students, or high-performance populations.
Strong facilitation, public speaking, and collaboration skills.
Preferred Qualifications
Certified Mental Performance Consultant (CMPC) or in progress.
Familiarity with NCAA athletics, Ivy League values, and/or high-performance settings.
Experience creating peer education or leadership curricula.
Knowledge of evidence-based leadership and performance approaches.
Experience with digital tools or learning management systems.

– Conduct assessments; provide real-time support; identify mental health concerns and refer to counseling services; operate the Mental Performance Lab tools; evaluate program impact.
DP2 for All – Student Engagement
– Adapt programming for the wider student community; develop embedded learning experiences and peer-led initiatives; coordinate with campus partners for scheduling; pilot programs with assessment measures; support communications and promotions.
Collaboration & Operations
– Work with Athletics, the Teevens Center, and Student Affairs; track participation metrics; support communications.
