Overview
This Colorado Department of Corrections (CDOC) posting will be used to fill vacant positions at our Buena Vista location. There are endless opportunities with the CDOC. The Buena Vista Correctional Complex is comprised of two separate facilities – Buena Vista Correctional Facility (BVCF) and Buena Vista Minimum Center (BVMC). The Buena Vista Correctional Facility was opened in 1892 under the name of Colorado State Reformatory. The Buena Vista Minimum Center was opened in 1999. BVCF has a capacity of 934 inmates at the medium custody level. BVMC has a capacity of 300 inmates at the minimum restrictive custody level. Position The Correctional Officer I (CO I) position maintains the safety and security of Colorado Department of Corrections' (CDOC) prison facilities. CO I positions support the CDOC Mission, Vision and Values with integrity and commitment while preparing inmates for community reentry. CO I staff communicate professionally with inmates, families, coworkers, supervisors, managers and the public; work as a cohesive team, and manage a diverse inmate population. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Work directly with inmates in a locked facility;
Monitor and control access to the facility and restricted areas;
Man an armed post (annual firearms certification required);
Monitor facility perimeter, detain unidentified pedestrians and/or vehicles;
Operate mechanical doors, security devices, equipment and alarms;
Control movement of inmates throughout the daily schedule;
Escort and transport inmates in authorized state vehicles;
Monitor visiting areas;
Conduct formal, informal and emergency counts;
Cross check and maintain movement logs;
Conduct searches for contraband (canine, metal detector, pat, perimeter, strip and vehicle searches);
Inspect facility and cells to maintain health, safety and sanitation standards;
Inspect inmate mail and property;
Respond to emergencies using established protocols (fights, medical, fires, escapes);
Follow tool and key control procedures, ensure proper storage and documentation;
Attend roll call and document incidents using established reporting practices;
Communicate pertinent information to coworkers and supervisors.
Positions are subject to working additional hours and/or shifts to maintain safety and security of facilities that are open 24/7.
Minimum Qualifications High School Diploma or a GED certificate.
Conditions of Employment

Possess a valid and unrestricted driver’s license;

Have NO felony convictions; the agency will consider related restrictions and magazine requirements as applicable;
Successful completion of a background investigation is required; provide disposition for any charges if applicable;
All offers contingent upon a health screening certifying ability to perform essential functions. Consent to hold harmless CDOC from testing and information use;
Successfully pass all modules of the Colorado Department of Corrections Basic Training, including English reading comprehension and competency assessments in Defensive Tactics;
Possess the physical ability to complete Defensive Tactics, including the listed physical requirements;
Will be exposed to Oleoresin Capsicum during Basic Training and on assignment;
Willing and able to work all shifts, weekends and holidays, and to report to work during inclement weather; shift schedules after Basic Training completion;
Willing and able to use physical force (as trained) and to work in a locked facility with fluctuating conditions;
Must be willing and able to travel and/or transport inmates in a state vehicle;
TB screening is required for all new employees.

Self-control and mental resilience while maintaining alertness during shifts.
