The sergeant is a first-line supervisor who directly supervises custody officers. They have considerable prisoner contact and may mediate conflicts between staff and prisoners. Assignments may include the yard, arsenal, administrative segregation/detention, Level IV housing units, or Control Center. A sergeant must know and implement all policies and procedures related to their position, providing instructions and assisting in the development of officers to maintain a safe environment for staff, prisoners, and visitors.
This position is designated as a drug and alcohol randomly tested (DART).
Education
Completion of 15 semester (23 term) college credits in any field. Experience
Two years of experience as a Corrections Shift Supervisor 11 or equivalent to a Corrections Officer or Corrections Medical Officer, including one year at the E9 level; or one year as a Special Alternative Incarceration Officer 9. The Department will not hire individuals with felony convictions or pending charges, per Public Act 140 of 1996. View the job specification at:

The Department may screen out applicants with felony convictions per Public Act 191 of 2017. Applicants with misdemeanor or felony convictions are ineligible until all sentences, including parole or probation, are satisfactorily completed.
