Overview
Top candidates will have a clinical or healthcare background with a passion for patient safety and quality improvement. This position is assigned to the Chief Quality Office and acts as a catalyst for improvement initiatives throughout the healthcare system. It will work closely with medical and hospital staff, as well as managers and senior leaders in implementing patient safety initiatives, improving patient care, and ensuring compliance with State Rules, DNV/ISO/NIAHO Standards, and other regulatory requirements. It is responsible for enhancing value in the University of Utah Health quality management system through planning, design, evaluation, monitoring, and analysis of processes for patient care, in support of regulatory requirements and quality improvement processes. Corporate Overview: The University of Utah is a Level 1 Trauma Center, nationally recognized for academic research, quality standards and patient experience. Our five hospitals and eleven clinics provide comprehensive services, medical advancement, and strong patient outcomes.
Responsibilities
Acts as a catalyst and facilitator for quality improvement and patient safety initiatives. Partners with leadership, providers and staff to design and implement strategies for value improvement for identified quality opportunities. Attends and facilitates quality improvement meetings, providing expertise on national quality programs, problem identification and resolution, quality improvement processes and tools, and other patient care and accreditation activities. Evaluate patient safety events and investigate root causes. Develop and implement improved quality reporting measures/information. Review and interpret patient care information from medical records and other data sources to identify quality of care issues and translate into actionable improvements. Create reporting documents, summaries, and presentations for monitoring and identifying improvement opportunities. Provide education to the organization regarding quality and patient safety topics, performance improvement, and regulatory metrics and standards. Engage stakeholders in delivering high-value care and the organization\'s Quality Management System. Perform internal audits and prepare reports to assess and improve organizational compliance with quality metrics, standards, and improvement initiatives. Develop and maintain collaborative relationships across the organization and participate with multidisciplinary teams in value improvement work. Collaborate with leaders, departments, committees, entities and individuals to support the delivery of high-value care. Provide mentoring and support to others accountable for value improvement.
Knowledge / Skills / Abilities
Knowledge of Healthcare Quality Improvement and Patient Safety topics. Strong leadership, quality improvement, and team facilitation skills. Data analysis and data presentation. Knowledge of the organization\'s Value Management System (e.g., internal ISO Quality Management System). Excellent written and verbal communication skills and attention to detail; demonstrated interpersonal skills. Knowledge of medical terminology, Microsoft Office (e.g., Excel), and healthcare quality metrics. Current knowledge of State, ISO, NIAHO, CMS standards, national payment programs, CMS Core Measures, and other national patient safety/quality indicators. Ability to work independently and adapt in a fast-changing environment.
Qualifications
Bachelor\'s degree in a healthcare, clinical, or business-related field or equivalency. One year clinical or healthcare experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Certified Professional in Patient Safety. Certification or training in Lean, Six Sigma Green/Black Belt, CPHQ, Healthcare Performance Improvement Facilitation, Human Factors, CQI, or equivalent. 3 years of clinical experience in a related healthcare field. Two years of leading and/or facilitating quality improvement activities in healthcare. Advanced degree in related field or equivalency.
