Overview

This Advanced Practice Provider role will have primary focus on GI & Inflammatory Bowel Disease patients. The Advanced Practice Provider (APP- NP, PA, Midwife) provides high-quality medical and/or surgical patient care. This position provides care to patients with acute and chronic complaints in collaboration with the Attending Physician. The APP provides diagnostic, therapeutic, and/or preventive healthcare service on a Collaborative APP/Physician team. The APP may perform histories and physicals; order and interpret tests; make diagnoses; treat injuries/illness; assist with surgical procedures; counsel patient and/or prescribe medication and those invasive procedures defined by the Virginia Board of Medicine. The APP works collaboratively with the medical team to deliver organized, timely, cost effective and quality patient care. The APP will provide patient care under a defined departmental and state-approved scope of practice with the collaboration of an Attending Physician(s). Responsibilities

Essential Job Statements – Clinical & Patient Care Responsibilities: demonstrate mastery of treatment and patient care of specialty population; coordinate patient care across the continuum of services through the patient’s trajectory of illness; assess health status via histories and physicals; initiate screening; order or perform diagnostic tests; provide direct patient care; assist with surgical procedures; provide therapeutic interventions; prescribe medications and counsel patients; initiate emergency procedures as needed; practice safety, infection control, and maintain clear documentation in the medical record; develop and implement short- and long-term therapeutic plans; coordinate care between primary and specialty services; maintain effective communication with the health care team to ensure coordinated care. Consultation: function as a consultant to other health care professionals; serve as liaison and negotiator for staff, patients and families; participate in multi-disciplinary care plans for complex patients; participate in patient education and staff training as applicable. Research: utilize current research to develop standards of care; participate in research, publications, consultation and educational activities; support clinical trials within the specialty area. Ethical Decision Making: apply clinical judgment in ethical decisions; promote interdisciplinary collaboration to resolve ethical dilemmas; recognize patient rights and values in decision making. Professional Development: pursue opportunities for professional growth; collaborate with physicians and other professionals; assess learning needs and participate in continuing education and maintenance of competencies; maintain required certifications and VCU Health privileges. Miscellaneous Responsibilities: perform other duties as assigned, support the mission of VCU Health, and assist team members as needed. Patient Population

Required Education:

Graduation from an accredited Nurse Practitioner, Nurse Midwife or Physician Assistant Program Preferred Education:

Service-specific education Licensure/Certification Required:

Current Virginia licensure from the appropriate Board as a Nurse Practitioner, Nurse Midwife, or Physician Assistant; current national certification appropriate for the role; credentialing per medical staff by-laws; current CPR and BLS; additional certifications (e.g., ACLS, PALS for pediatric services) may be determined at the department level Licensure/Certification Preferred:

Service-specific certification Minimum Qualifications

Required: Previous clinical experience with the population served. Other Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Cultural Responsiveness; 5 years with inflammatory bowel disease management preferred, including managing biologic and immunomodulatory therapies; experience in an academic healthcare system preferred. Working Conditions

Physical Requirements Physical Demands: Lifting/carrying varied ranges; pushing/pulling; kneeling, squatting, bending, and other movements as typical for clinical roles; ability to stand, sit and walk as required. Work Position: Sitting, Walking, Standing. Additional Physical Requirements/Hazards Manual dexterity; shift work; ability to move patients; hearing alarms; reach above shoulder; repetitive arm/hand movements; color vision; near and far acuity. Hazards include: exposure to latex, chemicals, moving machinery, dust/fumes, potential electrical hazards, radiation exposure, and other typical clinical risks. Mental/Sensory Capabilities include strong recall, reasoning, problem solving, clear speech, legible writing, reading and logical thinking; ability to handle a fast-paced environment, manage multiple priorities, and adapt to frequent change.
