National - Indirect Excise Tax Manager - Open Location FY23
Our National Tax and EY EDGE practice provides specialized tax technical services to US and global clients. EDGE stands for Exceptional Delivery and Growth Engine, a technical environment with deep process and service delivery experience that distinguishes EY in the marketplace.

This position supports excise tax compliance and advisory projects for clients in industries including Oil & Gas, Transportation, Manufacturing and Retail. The compliance role covers US Federal and State excise tax filings, including fuel tax obligations. The advisory work includes due diligence reviews, structuring assistance, licensing research and consultation, controversy support, interpretation of new legislation, and reviewing related correspondence prepared by junior staff. Examples include air transportation excise tax, alcohol and tobacco excise tax, the PCORI fee, Superfund excise tax, and firearms/ammunition excise tax. The position also coaches and develops others on the team.
Your Key Responsibilities You’ll work on a diverse set of projects, supporting client engagements by collaborating with team members, delivering quality work, and meeting deadlines. You’ll provide lead compliance support to the engagement team, supervise and evaluate assigned seniors & analysts, communicate with clients, provide tax technical recommendations, and resolve engagement issues. You’ll work in a collaborative culture that values information sharing.
Demonstrate an effective understanding of excise tax concepts and apply tax knowledge to client situations
Support the team in developing and delivering quality tax planning approaches with timely services and deliverables
Assist in identifying and engaging clients for excise tax compliance, planning, and other services
Prepare practical approaches to the client’s tax situation and arrive at appropriate conclusions
Develop recommendations and implementation plans in complex areas
Stay up to date on trends, developments and legislation impacting clients
Research complex tax issues and develop practical solutions
Administrative Function
Lead and coach team members in managing engagement lifecycle and economics
Responsible for financial and economic health of managed engagements
Skills And Attributes For Success
Ability to lead client discussions, monitor commitments and deadlines, and drive internal teams to completion
Collaborate with clients and colleagues to analyze tax issues and develop recommendations
Support compliance team with data analysis and benchmarking for tax calculations
Independent and objective decision making
Judgment to know when to ask questions or proceed
Receive direction from more senior team members
Ability to analyze federal and state statutes and regulations and apply them to facts
To qualify for the role you must have
Bachelor’s degree or Master’s degree (Accounting, Business, Finance or equivalent preferred)
Minimum 5+ years of experience in a professional services or tax services organization
Excellent organizational and verbal/written communications skills
Effective time management skills
Ability to work in a fast-paced professional services environment
Strong research skills using Westlaw, CCH, RIA, etc.
Strong analytical skills and attention to detail
Effective knowledge of excise tax concepts
Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint
Willingness to travel as needed and a balanced hybrid work environment
Ideally you’ll also have
CPA, EA, or JD/LLM (not required)
