Student Affairs & Incl Excellence The Learning Effectiveness Program (LEP) at the University of Denver is hiring LEP Tutors for the 2025-2026 academic year. We need tutors with a strong background in college-level Business, Engineering/Computer Science, Humanities, Languages, Mathematics, Science, and Social Sciences, from entry-level to advanced level. This position works under the direction of the Tutoring Coordinator and LEP Associate Director. LEP Tutors assist students in building confidence, independence, and academic skills in a one-on-one setting and provide access to resources to help students achieve academic goals. Tutoring at the LEP is NOT teaching and applicants must understand the difference between teaching and tutoring. Hours worked are based on student request and student needs during Fall, Winter, and Spring quarters with additional hours to be approved and/or required by the LEP Tutoring Coordinator. All LEP Tutors fall under the direct supervision of the LEP Tutoring Coordinator. Each tutor is assigned to a Lead Tutor who will act as their tutor mentor during their time as an LEP Tutor. The Learning Effectiveness Program serves neurodiverse learners who require competent and skilled tutors to assist them in learning academic and some non-academic skills needed to be successful at DU.
All new tutors must complete the online New Tutor Orientation training as well as the first 5 hours of the CRLA Certification on canvas before the end of the quarter they were hired in (or within a 10-week timeframe).
LEP participates in the CRLA Level I and Level II Certification. Tutors are expected to participate in the required training activities to maintain LEP tutoring standards and CRLA Level I and II Certification status. Activities include, but are not limited to: Complete the online LEP New Tutor Orientation to understand LEP students’ needs, neurodiversity, and Universal Design for Learning principles in tutoring sessions. Work toward earning the necessary 10 hours of CRLA Level I Certification training during the first year as an LEP Tutor. Attend supplemental trainings and tutor meetings as directed by the Tutoring Coordinator. Failure to attend required tutoring meetings or complete required tutor tasks (attendance records, tutoring assessments) may result in removal from this role. Complete at least 25 hours of tutoring during the academic year to meet CRLA Level I requirements. Attend any one-on-one meetings as requested by the Tutoring Coordinator. Essential Functions Effectively tutor in a one-on-one environment. Assist students in becoming self-sufficient, independent learners. Collaborate with LEP Academic Counselors to meet learning needs. Maintain and update Availability and Subjects on Accudemia (tutoring scheduling software). Complete Tutoring Assessments for all appointments within 48 hours of scheduled appointment. Update appointment information (changes, cancellations, etc.) within 24 hours. Help students clarify questions and understand why they had difficulty with the material. Provide academic tips and tools students can use after graduation from DU. Encourage critical thinking about course material. Explore new ways of learning with students. Help students develop a growth mindset and stay motivated with their learning methods. Maintain accountability before and during tutoring appointments. Complete all Tutoring Assessments timely and communicate outcomes clearly. Communicate with the Tutoring Coordinator/Lead Tutor via phone, email, or in-person regarding questions or concerns. Attend required trainings and tutor meetings throughout the academic year. Keep schedule updated and communicate about cancellations with the Tutoring Coordinator, students, and Lead Tutor. Perform additional tasks as needed by the Tutoring Coordinator. LEP Tutors must meet departmental expectations and are subject to termination for policy violations or excessive negative student feedback. Initial tutor training must be completed and active schedule loaded in Accudemia by Week 10 of the hiring quarter; failure to do so may result in removal and the need to re-apply. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Ability to tutor students one-on-one. Ability to apply Universal Design for Learning with neurodiverse learners. Ability to work with students experiencing anxiety and stress. Excellent and proactive communication skills. Ability to adapt tutoring behaviors based on best practices and LEP needs. Required Qualifications LEP Student Tutors must be currently enrolled in DU classes. Undergraduate students: Sophomore year or higher. Tutors must have a 3.0 GPA in the subject to be tutored and provide a letter of recommendation from a faculty/staff member in that field. Provide unofficial transcript to verify grades in courses to be tutored or show equivalent professional experience in the subject area. Be willing to adapt tutoring behaviors based on LEP needs. Must be located in the Denver Metro area and able to provide in-person availability. Initial Tutor Training on Canvas must be completed and active schedule loaded in Accudemia by Week 10 of the hiring quarter; failure to meet this requirement may result in removal and the need to re-apply. Professional Tutors LEP Professional Tutors must have at least 1 year of demonstrated experience in the subjects they tutor. Be willing to adapt tutoring behaviors based on LEP needs. Provide unofficial transcript to verify grades in courses to be tutored or show equivalent professional experience in the subject area. Must be located in the Denver Metro area and able to provide in-person availability. Initial Tutor Training on Canvas must be completed and active schedule loaded in Accudemia by Week 10 of the hiring quarter; failure to meet this requirement may result in removal and the need to re-apply. Preferred Qualifications Prior tutoring experience. Experience working with students from neurodiverse backgrounds. Work Schedule This is a part-time, non-benefited position. Hours are flexible. Tutors set their availability but are paid only for actual tutoring time. Tutor hours depend on student appointment requests. There are other paid opportunities such as Prep time, Admin time, and professional development time required by the Tutoring Coordinator. Tutors may not work over 40 hours per week or 80 hours per 2-week pay period. LEP Tutors, as part-time non-benefited employees, may not work over 1000 hours across all university jobs from January 2026 to December 2026. All new tutors must complete the New Tutor Orientation online training and CRLA Level 1 training before tutoring; initial training and schedule loading must be completed by Week 10 of the hiring quarter to continue in the role. Professional Tutors The hourly range is $18.81 - $21.81. For Fall 2025 this will increase to $19.25-$22.25 in January 2026.
