Job Summary

The Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA) supports the implementation of occupational therapy services for students enrolled in a California nonpublic school program. Under the supervision of a licensed Occupational Therapist, the COTA provides direct services, assists with evaluations, and collaborates with school staff and families to help students access their educational program. Services are delivered in alignment with each student’s Individualized Education Program (IEP), state regulations, and California Board of Occupational Therapy requirements. Essential Functions

Deliver occupational therapy services as outlined in student IEPs, following treatment plans developed by the supervising OTR/L. Support students in developing fine motor, visual-motor, sensory processing, self-regulation, and activities of daily living (ADL) skills needed for academic success. Implement sensory diets, classroom accommodations, and therapeutic activities designed to support participation and engagement in the school environment. Collect data and maintain detailed records of student progress; provide input to the OTR/L for IEP reports and treatment plan updates. Assist the OTR/L during student assessments by preparing materials, administering activities, and recording observations. Collaborate with teachers, behaviorists, paraprofessionals, and related service providers to integrate therapy strategies into the classroom and daily routines. Provide training and modeling for staff and families on the use of adaptive equipment, fine motor tools, sensory supports, and other therapy-related interventions. Maintain confidentiality and adhere to FERPA, HIPAA, and CBOT regulations. Participate in staff meetings, professional development, and ongoing supervision with the supervising OTR/L. Assist in maintaining a safe and organized therapy environment, including equipment and materials. Accountability

Ensure that school policies and procedures are carried out. Ensure that CA Educational Code is adhered to. Adheres to CHC Employee Handbook. Ensure the Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Laws are adhered to. Protect the confidentiality of client/student and families. Adhere to the ProAct Crisis Physical Intervention guidelines and requirements when working directly with students/staff. Knowledge/Ability/Skills

Knowledge of pediatric occupational therapy techniques and school-based practices. Ability to support students with diverse learning, sensory, and behavioral needs. Strong collaboration skills to work within a multidisciplinary team (teachers, behavior staff, counselors, speech therapists, etc.). Excellent organizational skills, with the ability to collect and manage student data. Compassion, patience, and adaptability in supporting students with disabilities. Education/Experience

Completion of an accredited Occupational Therapy Assistant program. Current certification from the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT). Active license as a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA) with the California Board of Occupational Therapy (CBOT). Experience working with children or adolescents with special needs, preferably in an educational or therapeutic school setting. Physical Requirements

Must have the ability to undergo training and implementation of Pro-Act, verbal de-escalation, and physical restraint procedures. Ability to stand and sit for extended periods of time for instruction and supervision. Special Job Requirements

Ability to work certain evenings for scheduled events (Open House; Achievement Night; Staff training, IEP meetings, etc.). Must have Valid CA Driver’s License. Contact with Others

Able to communicate clearly in oral and written form, as well as articulate expectations to the classroom team and students. Ability to clearly and professionally communicate w/parents. Extensive interpersonal interaction with peers and outside contacts. Employee Acknowledgement
