Overview
At Houston Methodist, the Clinical Research Nurse (CRN) position is a licensed clinician who supports, facilitates and coordinates daily clinical trial activities with minimal supervision. The CRN provides direct patient care to research patients under the supervision of the Clinical Trials Manager and Principal Investigator and implements clinical research patient care via the research protocol. The CRN works with the Performance Improvement department, sponsor and institution to support and provide guidance on GCP compliance, financial and related aspects of the research study. The CRN serves as a liaison between physicians, patients, staff and sponsors, delivering exceptional patient care and adhering to regulatory standards and Houston Methodist guidelines to ensure patient safety and customer service.

Responsibilities People Essential Functions
Use therapeutic communication to provide research interventions and coordinate with the interprofessional team as written in the research protocol. Contribute to teamwork by responding positively to requests for assistance.
Provide patient education regarding disease processes and involve patient and family in decision-making; evaluate comprehension and adapt teaching methods. Advocate for patient/family to identify and resolve clinical and ethical concerns using appropriate resources.
Facilitate onboarding and orientation for new staff with the Clinical Trials Manager. Precept new clinical research staff and support department improvements in turnover/retention/engagement.
Service Essential Functions
Demonstrate ability to manage multiple projects at different stages of the clinical research process (Phase 1–Phase 4).
Coordinate pre-site and site initiation visits; train hospital/clinic staff on protocol requirements; attend investigator meetings as needed.
Provide comprehensive nursing assessments to develop, implement and evaluate activities for all phases of clinical research; monitor safety and report adverse events.
Contribute to improving department patient satisfaction through service standards.
Quality/Safety Essential Functions
Follow the clinical research protocol and nursing process; modify care based on ongoing evaluation; perform nursing functions independently and with PI approval for conduct of clinical research.
Collect, process and ship protocol-required lab specimens; maintain inventory and certifications; perform study closeout and return materials to sponsor with data archiving.
Collaborate with PI, IRB and regulatory documents for submission; ensure compliance with local and federal standards; follow ICH/GCP guidelines.
Finance Essential Functions
Assist financial analyst in calendar development and Medicare Cost Analysis; distinguish standard of care vs. research and approve study calendars in the CTMS.
Identify, recruit and consent subjects; monitor enrollment goals and adjust enrollment strategies as needed.
Enter study data into CTMS per Houston Methodist Research Institute policy.
Growth/Innovation Essential Functions
Identify areas for innovation and efficiency in patient care operations using evidence-based practice; contribute to performance improvement projects.
Maintain ongoing professional growth; participate in unit activities; update the IDP regularly.

Qualifications Education
Bachelor's degree in Nursing or higher from an accredited school of nursing
Work Experience
One year acute care or clinical research experience
License/Certification Licenses and Certifications - Required
RN - Registered Nurse - Texas State Licensure (Compact Licensure); must obtain permanent Texas license within 60 days if establishing residency
BLS - Basic Life Support or Instructor (AHA)
