Department The Department of Epidemiology is one of the seven departments in the Gillings School of Global Public Health. It focuses on the development and application of research methods to understand the patterns and causes of health and disease and to improve populations’ health. The department has 40 tenured faculty, 24 fixed‑term faculty, 120 adjuncts, 32 EHRA non‑faculty, 22 postdocs, 28 SHRA staff, and 32 SHRA temporary staff, with a 27 million‑dollar operating budget.

Position Summary The Senior Research Scientist will serve as an epidemiologist and scientific lead for key components of two or more large multi‑center studies or clinical trials, such as the Telehealth‑Enhanced Assessment and Management after Stroke–Blood Pressure (TEAMS-BP) trial, the Access to and Effectiveness of Community‑Based Rehabilitation after Stroke study, and the Integrating Drone Delivery of AEDs Into EMS Response (IN‑AIR) study. Working with Principal Investigators, the Senior Research Scientist will develop and refine the Manual of Operating Procedures, manage reporting and integration with clinical teams, and disseminate results through manuscript and presentation preparations.

Key duties include:

Serving as a Data Coordinating Center liaison to the Data Safety Monitoring Board

Managing the Publications Committee, Project Coordinator, and data analyst roles

Creating Data Use Agreements and IRB submissions

Developing proposals, budgets, and funding agency communications

Designing and implementing complex data reporting templates and databases (e.g., REDCap)

Coordinating collaborative efforts with co‑investigators at domestic and international sites

Producing reports for funders

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements Relevant post‑Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent). For candidates with comparable independent research productivity, a relevant Bachelor’s degree (or foreign degree equivalent) plus 3 or more years of relevant experience may be acceptable. A terminal degree and licensure may be required.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience • Experience with quantitative data analysis and programming in statistical software such as SAS or R.

• Ability to evaluate medical literature.

• Public speaking experience.

• Experience with clinical trials and/or study pilot projects.
