Job Summary
As a key member of the Project Management team, the Project Engineer is responsible for the management and coordination of all technical aspects of new power generation capital projects. The role ensures engineering is aligned with corporate goals and is complete, accurate and constructible for all elements of a project’s scope. The Project Engineer oversees contractor engineering performance and coordinates all contractor and owner’s engineering interfaces. The position coordinates cross‑functional teams and builds effective relationships with key stakeholders, including contractors. The Project Engineer works directly with the Project Manager and Project Controls Specialist to ensure process alignment and compliance.
Job Duties / Responsibilities
Promotes safe behavior in accordance with company expectations and safety rules on the project.
Identifies engineered safety controls and hazard removal during engineering design and coaches to safe practices in the field.
Supports / Leads cross‑functional teams from development of EPC contract through permitting, engineering, construction, commissioning and close‑out.
Ensures documentation of engineering and construction quality is captured to support audit and prudency review.
Supports / Leads owner team in writing official Records of Decision to capture prudency of major project decisions.
Acts as contract manager for various engineering and construction contracts outside of the EPC, including Owner’s Engineer.
Manages review of engineering design to assure compliance with the contract, permits, codes, and utility standards while ensuring design supports the strategic, operational and maintenance goals of the project.
Coordinates with the Project Manager in following the Project Delivery System and ensuring requirements are met and producing associated deliverables.
Participates in contractor/vendor selection process with a specific goal of assessing engineering experience, competencies, and capability.
Leads technical open‑book engineering process with contractors during development of major projects and applies value engineering concepts.
Assists contractors and vendors during design and construction to resolve technical queries and interfaces.
Ensures all firms solicited to provide engineering services are duly licensed in the state of the project.
Ensures project compliance with NERC and security standards.
Ensures all documents generated on the project are stored in designated repository at close‑out.
Supports / Leads / Follows change management process for any potential design changes.
Participates in equipment inspection activities as agreed with the contractor.
Supports owner review and sign‑off of System Turnover packages from Construction to Start‑up and from EPC to Owner.
Supports commissioning and ensures performance, reliability and emissions testing are completed per contract.
Minimum Education Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering. Advanced degree preferred.
Minimum Experience
Project Engineer, Sr: 6+ years of applicable and progressive professional experience, preferably in engineering design, construction or operation of power systems. (5 years with a PE/PMP Certification/Master’s Degree)
Project Engineer, Sr Lead: 10+ years of applicable and progressive professional experience, preferably in engineering design, construction or operation of power systems. (8 years with a PE/PMP Certification/Master’s Degree)
Project Engineer, Sr Staff: 12+ years of applicable and progressive professional experience, preferably in engineering design, construction or operation of power systems. (10 years with a PE/PMP Certification/Master’s Degree)
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Excellent technical writing and verbal communication skills with strong computer skills and proficiency in Microsoft Office 365.
Strong interpersonal skills and leadership behaviors.
Expert knowledge of engineering fundamentals within at least one discipline (civil / mechanical / electrical / controls / chemical / construction).
Advanced knowledge of the practical application of engineering science and technology to power generation.
Knowledge of materials, methods, and tools involved in the construction or repair of power generation facilities and associated QA/QC protocol.
Knowledge of permits required for construction and operation of power generation facilities.
Experience with reviewing, executing, and managing large EPC contracts.
Advanced critical‑thinking skills and capability to use logic and reasoning to identify strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions.
Adept at complex problem solving; able to identify complex problems and develop and evaluate options and implement solutions.
Licensing & Certifications
Desired: Professional Engineer license and PMP certification.
