Base pay range $37,621.00 per year – $54,078.00 per year
Salary Grade & Bonuses Grade: NC05‑NC07 All hires are eligible for a $3,000 sign‑on bonus. Positions also eligible for an employee referral bonus program ($1,000).
About the Department The North Carolina Department of Adult Correction (DAC) is one of the largest state agencies with more than 19,000 employees. It safeguards and preserves the lives and property of its citizens through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced after conviction for violating North Carolina laws.
Job Overview We are hiring full‑time Correctional Officers for the Correctional Officer I, II, and III levels statewide. Those with prior NC correctional experience can return with full credit for each year of experience.
Responsibilities
Ensure the care, custody, and control of offenders.
Tour assigned areas, requiring periods of climbing stairs, observing offender activity in person and on closed‑circuit monitors.
Identify offenders who have behavioral, medical, or other problems so appropriate safety and security measures may be taken.
Perform general security duties to prevent escape, disorder, rule infractions, and harm to offenders, visitors, and staff.
Search offenders, visitors, cells, and other areas for weapons and contraband.
Monitor and regulate offender and staff movement.
Maintain and record offender counts, cell assignments, and other pertinent information.
Escort offenders within and outside the institution.
Use and maintain keys and other equipment.
Supervise offender work details.
Qualifications
Applicant must have an active Driver’s License.
Must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
Minimum Education and Experience:
Correctional Officer I: High School or GED diploma or equivalent.
Correctional Officer II: High School or GED diploma + one year experience as a Correctional Officer, or equivalent.
Correctional Officer III: High School or GED diploma + two years experience as a Correctional Officer, or equivalent.
Trainee Appointment: High School or GED diploma or equivalent.
Work Schedule The position is full‑time. Employees must be able to work any shift, including rotating, fixed shift, split shift, days, nights, weekends, holidays, and mandatory overtime as required.
