Correctional Officer (Central Region-NC)
Location: Central Region of North Carolina. Role: Correctional Officer I.
Pay & Benefits Base salary range: $37,621 – $54,078 per year. Additional benefits include a $3,000 sign‑on bonus, $1,000 referral bonus, and step pay based on experience.
Agency The North Carolina Department of Adult Correction (DAC) safeguards and preserves the lives and property of citizens through the care, custody, and supervision of adult offenders. DAC operates state prisons, community supervision, and related services.
Job Description The DAC is hiring full‑time Correctional Officers for all levels: I, II, and III. The position requires the officer to maintain security, enforce rules, monitor offenders, and ensure safe movement within the institution.
Responsibilities
Ensure the care, custody, and control of offenders.
Tour assigned areas, monitor behaviors, and use closed‑circuit monitors.
Identify offenders with behavioral, medical, or other problems and execute appropriate safety measures.
Perform general security duties to prevent escape, disorder, and rule infractions.
Search offenders, visitors, cells, and other areas for weapons and contraband.
Maintain accurate records of offender counts, cell assignments, and location.
Escort offenders within and outside the institution.
Use and maintain keys and equipment, supervise offender work details.
Qualifications
High school diploma or GED required; additional education or equivalent experience preferred.
Correctional Officer I: high school/GED; no prior experience required.
Correctional Officer II: high school/GED plus one year experience as a Correctional Officer or equivalent.
Correctional Officer III: high school/GED plus two years experience as a Correctional Officer or equivalent.
Active North Carolina driver’s license.
Certification eligibility with the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
Must pass a background check and drug screening.
Veteran’s preference – attach DD‑214 (Member‑4).
National Guard preference – attach NGB 23A if current, or DD256/NGB 22 if former.
Working Conditions Full‑time, shift schedule (rotating, fixed, or split). May include day, night, weekend, holiday, and mandatory overtime.
