Job Overview The Student Safety and Wellness specialist plays a key role in promoting safe, supportive, and healthy learning environments across the state. This position provides technical assistance, training, and program coordination to districts and schools to strengthen student safety measures, mental health supports, and overall wellness initiatives. The position provides technical assistance for Montana public schools; gathers and analyzes information regarding teacher student safety and wellness needs and development of appropriate in‑service responses to those needs. The position also provides other related educational activities under the general direction of the State Superintendent, applicable policies, procedures, laws and regulations of the State of Montana and the federal government.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (Behaviors)

Knowledge of establishing programmatic objectives and priorities and creating work plans and schedules.

Knowledge of program administration.

Knowledge of departmental programs and their correlation to this program.

Knowledge of grant application and management procedures.

Skilled in developing program objectives, evaluating program performance and determining administrative adjustments as necessary.

Skilled in providing public information on program services.

Ability to design, implement and analyze needs assessments for state and local education services.

Ability to conduct research to find evidenced‑based practices and service delivery models.

Ability to create or design, implement and evaluate innovative health and safety education strategies or innovative program service delivery models on a statewide basis.

Ability to revamp or revise researched models to fit Montana‑specific tribal and rural communities.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with OPI leadership, colleagues, and diverse public, private, and community‑based agencies.

Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.

Minimum Qualifications (Education and Experience)

College degree (Bachelor’s) preferably in Education, Mental Health, Substance Prevention or Treatment, Business, Criminal Justice, Public Administration, and/or a related field.

3 years job‑related work experience.

Other combinations of education and experience will be considered on a case‑by‑case basis.
