Position Description The Ranch Manager (RM) will provide operational excellence through thoughtful management and leadership, communication with the family office, and sound financial accountability. This is a multi‑faceted role with diverse responsibilities that require teamwork, entrepreneurship and adaptability, focused on continuous improvement of operations and efficiency. With a passion for land conservation, the RM must be able to function at a detailed operational level, anticipate needs, act accordingly, and provide long‑term leadership and strategy for the ranch.
The property is a private working ranch adjacent to the Northern California coast, near Half Moon Bay. The Ranch is dedicated to stewarding and enhancing important habitats and infrastructure throughout the property. It encompasses over 2,000 acres of old‑growth redwood forests, grasslands, spring creeks, riparian areas and dryland pastures at elevations ranging from 330 to over 1,400 feet. Regenerative ranching, including rotational grazing and adaptive management, is utilized to sustain and enhance the land for future generations.
Qualifications
Excellent contemporary ranch management skills and strong animal husbandry and livestock handling skills, with familiarity in ecologically based land conservation methods.
Collaborative management style based on clear communication, vision for the future, and excellent problem‑solving skills.
Demonstrated experience managing and directing operations at a working ranch with multiple employees.
Excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills.
Bilingual (Spanish) ability helpful but not required.
Familiarity with current computer business software and GIS software (ArcGIS) expertise required.
Excellent project management, record‑keeping and project analysis abilities.
Familiarity with wildfire readiness and mitigation methodology required.
Wildland firefighting training/certification and formal emergency response training desirable but not required.
Ability to work under harsh weather conditions, lift heavy items and other general ranch conditions required.
Residing on site in ranch‑supplied housing required.
Education: no specific requirement, but a relevant undergraduate and/or advanced degree in ranch management, agribusiness, environmental science, forestry or related program preferred. A combination of education and experience will be considered.
Responsibilities The RM will oversee daily operations of the Ranch and provide seasonally adaptable long‑term work plans. The RM works closely and collaborates with the Ranch team, providing leadership support to key operations, including livestock husbandry, agriculture, pasture management, landscaping and infrastructure maintenance.
The RM is responsible for business operations, leadership development, internal communication, community engagement, marketing of livestock, and administrative duties. The position requires handling complex responsibilities ranging from routine daily tasks to long‑term strategy designed to adapt to changing land or operational conditions.
The RM will be a working manager, focused on details and solid knowledge of ranch operations to oversee all activities, working hand‑in‑hand with ranch workers as needed. The successful RM will recommend changes that improve overall ranch operations.
