Job Summary The University of Colorado Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology seeks individuals with demonstrated commitment to creating an inclusive learning and working environment. This 1.0 FTE faculty position is at the rank of Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA). Under the direction of full-time faculty or designee, this role provides primarily outpatient with some inpatient medical care services at the UCHealth Highlands Ranch Hospital for the University of Colorado Division of Gastroenterology. Primary functions in the inpatient/consult service include care for patients with general gastroenterology disorders, with a focus on pancreaticobiliary disorders. The provider will see new consults, discuss with attending physician, follow up after procedures, arrange for discharge medications post procedure, and collaborate with physician colleagues on care coordination. Other duties include coordinating, triaging, and organizing patient flow, patient follow up, and test result review. Minimum expectation is 40 hours per week, including at least 32 hours of direct patient contact (clinic visits with outpatients and inpatients).

Key Responsibilities

Independently performing age-appropriate history and physical examinations for complex acute, critical and chronically ill patients

Accurate and efficient documentation in EPIC system

Advisement of patient scheduling based on disease concerns

Reviewing medical records to determine clinic eligibility

Requesting outside diagnostic tests and pathology/cytology as needed

Ordering and interpretation of labs or diagnostic tests prior to multidisciplinary review

Prescribing medications as needed, including pre-procedure medications

Conducting peer-to-peer reviews or writing medical necessity letters with insurers for pre-authorization

Communicating with referring physicians regarding patient referrals

Sending patient letters to referring physicians using EPIC

Independently seeing patients in follow up as needed

Collaborating with team members to finalize patient plans and assist with ordering tests and referrals

Contacting referring physicians/PCP for other medical issues or referrals to appropriate specialty/providers

Facilitating patient, staff, and family decision making by providing educational tools

Providing patients with hospital resources as needed

Tracking patient outcomes/data

Compliance with hospital protocols/standards; attending departmental meetings regularly

Work Location Onsite – primarily in the attached medical office building at Highlands Ranch Hospital in Highlands Ranch, CO; inpatient duties on occasion.

Qualifications Minimum Qualifications Nurse Practitioner:

MSN from an accredited Nurse Practitioner program

Current APRN licensure by a national professional organization

Current Colorado Registered Nurse licensure

Admission to the Advanced Practice Registry of the Colorado Board of Nursing

Prescriptive authority

Current ACLS certification

Physician Assistant:

Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant program

Current Colorado Physician Assistant licensure

Prescriptive authority

Two or more years of PA practice experience

Current ACLS certification

Preferred Qualifications

For NP, DNP preferred

Three or more years of experience in Gastroenterology

Three or more years of inpatient experience

Three or more years of outpatient experience

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of gastroenterology clinical practice and patient care

Knowledge of organizational policies and procedures

Knowledge of medical equipment and safety precautions

Ability to apply medical knowledge to patient care and communicate effectively in a team

Ability to manage patient records and maintain quality standards

Ability to respond calmly in emergencies

Salary, Benefits, and Standards Anticipated pay range: $120,000–$140,000. The University provides comprehensive benefits and total compensation beyond base pay. The posting notes the hiring range and that the position may require travel or additional duties as needed.
